My guess is that it has something to do with edited and/or deleted posts. When a poster edits their post it looks like the software increments "the number of posts" counter even though a new post has not been added and deletions do not seem to decrease the post count.
Just a thought, but have you tried reindexing the DB? That would probably clean up the counter/pointer problem.
