An interesting read. They struggled to choose between the top 2, but the bottom 2 were easy (for them). Interesting article, likely to spark some debate (and hate mail), but I found it worth the read.
I've owned the top two, driven the 4th, and ridden in the 3rd at an autocross and on a track.

I'd agree with putting the M235 at the bottom, especially when price is factored in. It's the least balanced of the bunch. The suspension and brakes seem overmatched by the power.

My 228i had the track package, and it really reminded me of an E36 M3, except for the steering feel. Getting 37 MP(US)G highway didn't bother me either. I'd still rank it below the 1M and M2, 'cause while I understand the point about them both being ridiculous overkill, sometimes that's what you want out of life.

For me, the M2 is on top, 'cause 1 - it's not trying to kill you and 2 - I'm prejudiced on account of owning one.
