I got the auto gear box with paddles.
In manual and sport mode, you can choose the gear you want in the limits of the RPM. It can't go below 1000 rpm, the box change automatically to the lower gear and at the rev limit, it changes to the upper gear. In between, you can put and keep the gear you want.
In the beginning I was missing the control of the gears as I was used to manual gear box. With the paddles on manual mode, I'm feeling almost in full control of the gear-box. It's very nice.
