It could be a split in the Ariel wire which is actually mounted in the back window glass.
Mine failed, and the signal was lost every time I put the rear window heater on, then came on again when turned off. I had a new back window put in at BMW main dealer under my warranty.
But I still lose dab signal in certain places which bugs the hell out of me
