From what I've seen on opening them I think it would be easier to replace the pipe as welding the holes around the back might be a pain. Saying that welding a new pipe in will have similar challenge although there may be enough space to get the torch around the back. Perhaps sleeving over the pipe would be simpler, ie slit a new pipe then put the seem on the opened side only.

I bought the MPE from Cotswold in the end and was very happy with it.

My m135i is going now and I couldn't get the MPE off. I've a feeling it's the same exhaust, my standard one is kicking around my garage if it's any interest for practise? I'm a fair way, but at least same country I think.
