Which engine? The 1.6L presumably. (N13b16 in 114i, 116i, 136bhp, 118i 170bhp 120i 170bhp)
N13 Vanos solenoids are ringed on photo below.
Actually those may be the camshaft position sensors.
FOUND THE VANOS solenoids. There is one under the wastegate actuator and on the other side, its lower down under the various pipes so not easy to change.
