Save for a couple models like the 3, 5, and X3; all the G-chassis models have some weird ass styling quirks. Overall they still look good, but I miss clean designs. It's just a sign of the times, you either set trends or you fall behind.

Maybe the 'quirky' designers at BMW thought it was an opportunity to add yet more unnecessary 'design'
. In all seriousness it is probably a regulation thing either way. I imagine if they changed the overall shape of the bodywork/arches then that could have had another implication on safety testing etc so they took the easy route and just tacked a little bit onto the arch. Could be wrong of course, purely speculating. I just know new EU regs require the arch to be so many centimetres overlapping the wheel.
