The new trend of BMW to place the turbos in the v of the engine sure seems like it would be trapping in too much heat to provide for turbo longevity though. I'd guess that N54 turbos hold up much better than the new V8tt, but of course, that's just a guess.
I have stock turbos on my 911, however, I have replaced them once because of compromised seals which is a typical issue with 993 turbos.
