Great video. I find that these older cars are much more suited to Doug's review style as by today's standards they are very "quirky" and just much more interesting to learn about.

This car was a big deal back in the day and won a lot of praise from automotive journalists. C/D was enamored with this car back in the day, beating out the then aging W126 S-Class and Value-Leader Lexus LS400.

Like Doug said, this really sent a warning to Mercedes that BMW intended to be on the map of German luxury brands. MB was so starstruck by BMW's V12 that the next W140 S-Class which arrived in 92' was pure excess, and can actually be seen as an earlier example of the horsepower wars. In order to overshadow the 7er the S600 received a 6.0L V12 making 402hp and 428lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 time of 5.7 compared to the 7er's 296hp and 332lb-ft and 0-60 of high 6's-low 7's. Of course the price was also $140k which was outrageous for the time. Honestly, the full-size luxury flagship class has some of the most interesting history behind it.
