For some, they truly have a hard time meeting people due to work schedule, location, being shy, etc. Those are few and far between though. Many of them just have mental issues or want the gratification for their egos.
I remember taking a college sociology class that studied dating sites and the percentages of what people actually were looking for. Surveys were distributed, and the results indicated that small percentages of women actually swiped right on anyone, and an even smaller percentage wanted relationships or hookups. Most wanted the attention, which makes sense considering the nature of social media. Guys had a higher percentage of hookups, but had a similar amount of attention seeking/ego building.
