The Golf has a slightly larger trunk, but the difference is not all that big. 360 versus 380 litres. The Golf is more focused on practicality, while the BMW is more aimed at people who give the driving experience higher priority. That is why even the FWD Mini is smaller inside than its rivals. It has a more complicated suspension.
I see pretty much no benefits with missing back doors.
