Lurker here, prompted to first post. I ordered a 135i for my wife, and have been over here learning about the N54 among other things.

The more I learn about recent bimmers the more it occurs to me that BMW could've chosen to market the 135 differently than they have. I doubt it's materially cheaper to build a 135 than a 335, performance, weight etc are about the same. While they are stylistically different, (sleek vs. pugnacious) they are mechanically pretty identical.

I think they could've opted to market the 135 as a 335 variant, basically a short-wheelbase 335i. Dressed up with bonus features like the sexy brembos and M-bits, and absent the more 'entry' priced 128i, seems like they could've taken a page from the Ferrari playbook and called the one a "335i SWB"

Just another way to look at the contrast between the models!
