BMW has been forced into this kind of marketing, the same as other car makers.
Merc now has a FWD 'AMG' ,
Audi has its S and RS
VW has R

BMW like Audi is more specific to only building cars, so they have to look at the volumes in each market segments and therefore use their 'M Sport' as a tool for the 'performance' style in their models to generate more sales thought the appeal of the M. Where it falls down now is that they are not totally differentiating them.

If BMW only did 'M Sport' in each model where it only used the highest performance motor in that engine range (4pot) (6pot) along with a M sport body and interior package it would be accepted, as a sub version of the M'number' and it would be seen as a seperate model variant. The problem now is that you can get M on everything.

Perhaps BMW should have a true 'M' and create a "M Sport" badge for these variants.

All these BMWs now have more electronic gismos than you can count, so perhaps it should be a 'Q' badge
