Winter tyres , silly question

Seen a lot of worth it / not worth it for the UK even down to the fact that you may have invested in a winter set of wheels and tyres but the chap behind you on the road hasn't!!!

Anyway , my silly question is the step and tyre size on the M135i is key to the way it handles , fronts are 225 rears 245 IIRC and the Winter Wheel and tyre offer from BMW are 205? am I stupid or will this compromise the whole car? surely if you wanted to keep the cars handling but improve in the colder months you would have the same size tyres but just winter spec?

saw that Autocar thing about Mich AP4's on Porsches and got me thinking as they point was that they come in 20 + sizes

You can definitely fit winter tyres in the same size as your summer tyres. It depends on which conditions you want to optimize the car for. In general, wide tyres work best on solid surfaces, like tarmac and ice. Narrow tyres perform better in deep snow and slush.

If you want the best possible grip in very slippery conditions, you need very soft winter tyres. That will of course compromise the handling at high speeds. Wiinter tyres are fairly grippy, but not nearly as responsive as summer tyres. They are also more prone to aqua planing, so you need to be more careful in heavy rain.

I assume you've got 245/40/18 + 245/35/18 summers, so I'd get 225/40/18 winters all around since 245/35/18 winters are rare.
I only found Pirelli sottozero RFT in that size.
