Cool BMW M135i vs Subaru WRX STI 340R Track Test by Auto Express

Auto Express UK track tests the new BMW M135i versus the Subaru WRX STI 340R. Here's how they compare on paper.

BMW M135i

3 liter inline 6 cylinder
316 hp / 450 Nm torque
0-62 mph (0-100kmh) in 5.1 seconds (manual), 4.9 seconds (automatic)
Weight: 3174 lbs

Subaru WRX STI 340R

2.5 liter 4 cylinder
316 hp / 450 Nm torque
0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds
Weight: 3249 lbs

And here's how they compare in real life on the track.

It's such a shame that the M135i is such a good car yet soooooo ugly

Also, I'm pretty sure they guy has said it wrong... I thought the M135i came with the 8-speed ZF automatic, not the double clutch gearbox....

Yeah... comparing a 2013 car to an unchanged-since-2008 car (Subaru folks would say unchanged since 2004...)
Sure the M135i is a pretty capable car, but the triple-LSD, user controlled center diff STI would eat it on a snow track. Or getting out of a snow bank after getting parked overnight in a snow storm. Pretty rare events for 99% of the people reading this thread, but here in Northern Canada, it may be worth it

Agreed its just the front though. I understand the car is smaller but so what why do you have bunch up the headlights like that? They can still flow like all the other models... That goes for all the one series. Wider grill... Stretch out the lights, done.

Did anyone else notice the video description said "BMW 1 series M coupe" instead of M135i

You are right on both accounts. Test driver must have confused it with a dct box since the 8 speed auto shifts so quick and smooth and both come with paddle shifts

both awesome cars. but feeling a bit sad for the impreza as it is a dying breed. buyers these days prefer a flashy luxurious hot hatch (eg. golf gti, focus ST) than a raw overboosted powerhouse.

The 1-series is beyond hideous while the STI, like always, sounds like it has a misfire. Decisions, decisions...

I've seen one of these in white, in real life and as much as I like BMW, I have to say it is NOT an attractive car. Having owned a 135i coupe I really, really wanted to like this car and buy one as a DD, but it just didn't gel with me. A lot of people have and will purchase this car, but the fact remains - it's unattractive! If only BMW had taken more effort to make the front lights look more sleek like on the rest of their range....

Why are we even talking about a car with no Limited slip differential vs a WRX 4WD. no LSD = FAIL

Don't you worry my brother, it's not really a shame for you because it can not be had here in NA regardless, so relax...

You are right, he needs to read up more before he reviews, otherwise he is as genuine as they come. I really like his style in general /
