rear windscreen heating elements

some of my F20's rear windscreen heating elements seem to be broken, coincidentally only those not in the path of the rear wiper.

is this normal? i can see heating element wires outside the path of the wiper, but these do not melt anything....?

This is normal. Its not meant to melt ice on the parts the wiper dont reach.

The wires outside the path of the rear wiper are aerials for the radio.
So it's completely normal, because they are not supposed to melt anything.

Thanks for this topic. I noticed the exact same thing today when there was some fog on my rear window..
But if they are part of the antenna, then why is there the sharkfin antenna on the roof??

Sharkfin is not only for GPS/Navi. My parents got the 1-series too and they didnt opt for navi, still they got sharkfin.

I noticed this also. I had some pretty thick snock/ice on there the other day and the wiper area cleared very fast. What i did notice, however is that the outer areas did clear, but at a slower rate. It deffinately looked like something was melting it (didnt appear to be heat from inside the car as ice on the side windows wasnt defrosting). If you look closely at the lines within the rear window youll see a few breaks in the contacts as to seperate these areas. I wonder whether the outer areas do defrost, but just at a much slower rate - possibly to help with ecodynamics maybe?

thanks for the help guys - glad to know its normal!

its difficult to see the gaps in the wires because i have the privacy glass (from outside its nearly impossible to see them at all!

Shark fin is also used for the areial for the snap in adaptor
