For you 125i owners..

Considering an order..

How would you compare the performance to any previous performance cars you have driven?

Garage List
2012 125i  [4.50]
I had a 1989 635 CSiA
The 125i outperforms, though it doesnt have the same caché ie respect
I've had 3's and 5's but more than 10 years ago.... But the 125i seems better than my memory of those too

The 125i MSport offers the complete package for me

Value for money (except options), not too small, very M nimble, Fast, powerful and very very drivable in it's different modes.

BMW finally put a great engine in 1er that is cheap to keep but now offers better performance than the 25's & 28's of many prevous models.

It was not that long ago that sub 7 second 0 to 100kmh time was considered a supercar time.

I wonder what power the car produces on a dyno? I would of expected a bigger difference than the figures of the 118'.. Do they run the same turbo?

The 125i has a bigger displacement than the 118i and a larger bi turbo (125i has the same engine as in the 328i only with different size exhauste to restict it to 160kw) If you fit a 75mm+ tuned exhauste to a 125I you get 210kw. In threary, if you upgrade the exhauste to 90mm on a 125i you will be able to use the M chip (mapped) for the 328i when released and punch it out to 255kw

If you are only talking about performance cars I "have driven", but not own.

I did some "fun ride" with the following (all models listed got at least 30 to 45 mins behind the wheel experience):
- M5 2012 model
- M3, current & previous gen
- 328 & 335 current gen
- Ferrari F430
- Integra Type R DC2
- Golf GTi
- WRX(s)
- EVO(s)
- The list will keep going on and on and on ... Especially with Aussie V8 ...

I guess you are most interested to find out how's the 125 compare to all these car.

To sum up, 125i is not the fastest car I've driven so far, but this is definitely one of the top pick for driving fun.

To be very honest, I can't find anything within the same price range can beat 125i driving pleasure.

Since last April I have a new 125i (normal not M). I have to say that you really feel that the torque is always there. Manual gearbox is as must have with this engine. Yesterday I have travelled from Paris area to Freiburg in Germany. In the German part of this route I have been amazed to see how the car reaches 200 km/h quickly, silently and easily. My ODO is now 5000 kms.

I have installed a sports muffler on mine to give at least a bit of noise to the car and also a drop in k&n air filter. Not a massive change in performance, but I am awaiting the BMS tune designed for the 328 this week so that should definitely increase performance

The 328i has the same engine and chip, the only difference is the rear section pipes on the 125i. It is only from the cat back that the 125i is smaller.

If you replace the standard pipes with 75mm tuned pipes from the cat and the rear exhaust back section you will increase the output (cost is around $2,600)

There are several specialist Exhaust shops around that can make the pipes and change the exhaust to mimic the 328i's 75mm system. That will increase the output.

If you want to wait until the 328i M tune chip comes out and then get the full exhaust changed to suit it, you could get 255kw (estimated). Not sure if you really need all that extra horse.

I haven't received my 125i yet so I can't really pass too much judgement.

I've brought my 125i to replace a Mk6 Golf GTI DSG which really was a fantastic car. From reading all the reviews the 125i should be a very capable replacement and offer improved performance, handling and refinement. The 125i can certainly be considered a hot hatch if that's what your after.

My only slight concern from the reviews is there is supposedly no gratifying exhaust note on the 125i which is a real shame.

Adrian,

Can you suggest where can I go for performance muffler in Canberra please? Would love to check them out =D

Also if you don't mind asking, how much did you spent on it?

I just had a straight through muffler installed at the back of the car, no change to the actual exhaust pipe at this stage. I replaced the dual tips with a single tip that fits perfectly in the gap in the rear bar. It's actually a ford gt tip but looks tough at the rear. I have an m sport so I'm not sure if the gap on the stock bar is the same shape or size. Had it done at powatone in fyshwick for 350. I may go for a full exhaust at a later date but I wasn't keen at this stage given potential for warning lights. The sound is however dramatically improved.

I have also replaced my mk6 gti with the 125i and I think it is an all round better car. I have the m sport version and whilst the car is definitely quicker in a straight line it feels more composed on corners and rear wheel drive is definitely more fun. Don't get me wrong I loved the gti but the ultimate reason for changing it was that it required a full engine change under warranty at 49k and was off the road for 2 months. The service side of things at vw was terrible and I was fortunate that BMW had a model that really suited my needs. I have to say that the customer service I now receive from BMW is fantastic and be could learn a lot!

Interesting........ that's exactly what I'm expecting "an all round better car". I'm excited to see how my first rear wheel drive car compares to the gti's handling.

I had better luck than your good self with gti. I didn't have any problems with it and sold it on recently with 38k on the clock.

The 125i M Sport feels more glued to the road than the GTi.

I would not worry about the exhaust note, you will be too busy enjoying being pushed back into your seat and seeing the road come at you.

If you want to have a better sound, I am informed that BMW Performace are releasing a tuned 70mm twin system back box and pipes later in the year just for that reason.

A friend in the USA says that you can get a mufler shop to modify the aftermarket M3 system (ebay USA $900.00) to fit a F20 to have quad pipes and a great sound.

The BMW unit will be around 2,200 euro.

There's no power increase quoted and I wouldn't expect one as it's just the backbox.

Maybe 1 or 2 bhp.

Sound only
You have to replace most of the exhaust system if you want to increase HP

ok, tnx for the info. not going to bother then. the quoted price ZAR 10k is far too much just to have a sportier sound. they quoted ZAR 47k excl fitting for the PPK and that is just insane.

I have heard that REMUS will be releasing a box for both the M125i and M135i early next year.
I believe the BMW Performance one is made by REMUS
