Ha ha. London Broadcasting Company. "London's Biggest Conversation" was a play on the initials for their very successful advertising program years ago.
I wanted to show that the station selection is seen both on the consol as well in the panel when selected using the steering wheel. |

Actually I think the small display also shows stations on changing via steeringwheel. At least I believe to remember that from my first testdrive in september.

I don't have the black panel but wish I did.
To be honest it should be standard. My £15k Fiat has more factory fitted options than the M Sport has - it's poor form BMW!! |

I can confirm that you don't need the black panel option to see the radio stations in the instrument panel. Actually I still haven't found any useful info missing in the regular panel.

I doubt there is a difference in what they can display. Its just how they display it. Well ok, I'm not sure about the Eco Pro stuff, like the hints "less throttle" or "don't use manual mode" etc. Those are displayed below the rev-counter. Oh and speaking of that: With the blackpanel you have the bmw typical "current fuel consumption" indicator there, fully electronical instead of oldschool-needle as in my beloved E30s, but its there. Its color depends on the mode.
Speaking of changing color. Depending on the light situation outside (day/night) the letters and numbers of the lower half of the instrument cluster (fuel level, milage, time, temp and whatelse is there) changes from red (night/early morning) to white (day). Not sure how or if that is done on the small display. But I think as its a multi-color lcd too, at least the lcd adapts probably too.

The throttle hints are not displayed at all in my car, but the current cunsumption is displayed in all modes except Eco Pro (where it is replaced by kilometers "earned").
The color changes are the same as with the optional black panel. I wish I could have selected to show oil temperature instead of outside temperature with the click of a button. It is a lot of work to enter the hidden menu to find it, and then all the other information goes away. |

I didn't mean the current consuption you can see via BC-button in the center, but the graphical indication like its done on older BMW's.
Like here, below the RPM: http://data.motor-talk.de/data/galle...o225-36775.jpg That is shown digitally with the blackpanel. But yeah, its not a usefull option, but one thats nice to look at.

Nothing beats the overview given by this old instrument cluster (refering to your picture). Fast to read, all the information you need. Brave new world!!!

Yeah.. I seriously need another E30 in my life! I am so missing them.. I just recently noticed that my F20 is more or less exactly the length of my E30s. Just wider and taller.

I really liked the E30 instrument panel. I think your picture is from a Touring. :-)
I also prefer the blinker stalk in the older models. If I indicate left to go left around a roundabout, I need to tap it twice to the right to indicate when I'm leaving the roundabout. This annoys me a little, since I have to do this pattern a lot where I live. |

interestingly, I had a 1989 6 series that wasn't as wide as the F20. With the 6er I could drive into my garage without making adjustments, but with the 1er I have to fold the mirrors in. Its a double garage with a central pillar between the doors....maybe I should knock out the pillar and make one really wide door :-)

I'd check the statics before you do that
.
