Arrow F20 1-series full lineup overview in AutoBild magazine...

Hot off the presses...

AutoBild has a nice cover story on the new 1er (F20). Best pics(computer) so far.

photos & story from: www.AutoBild.de

AutoBild says the new F20 car will start off first as a RWD model. Later SOME FWD will be offered such as the five door mini van called the: CAT (Compact Activity Tourer) - a mixture of minivan and wagon. And a JOY model (yes, really!) - a mixture of wagon and coupe (ala the ugly Z3 coupe?) There will be a 3rd model called the: FAS - Family Activity Sport-tourer

BODY STYLES:
three door 2011
five door 2011
coupe 2012
cabriolet 2012

ENGINES:

Gasoline
  • 116i 1.6L Turbo 136 PS (din)
  • 118i 1.6L Turbo 156 PS
  • 120i 2.0L Turbo 184 PS
  • 125i 2.0L Turbo 218 PS
  • 130i 2.0L Turbo 252 PS
  • 135i 3.0L Turbo 306 PS
Diesel
  • 116d 2.0L 122 PS
  • 118d 2.0L 150 PS
  • 120d 2.0L 184 PS
  • 123d 2.0L 204 PS

One interesting note is that the magazine says the 135i will remain a sporty coupe and cabrio while the top model will be the 1M with 340 PS, the same engine out of the Z4 - so they say! AutoBild's words not mine!

After the model intro BMW will offer a new top of the line diesel model called the: 125d This engine will be a 2.0L TWIN TURBO FOUR CYLINDER with 245 PS

Maybe someone can translate the magazine's last paragraph for me... from my understanding they say the F20 will last about seven years and that towards the end of the model life BMW will switch over to FWD & AWD for all models.

AutoBild also states that the 3rd generan Mini engines will also be shared within the new F20 range. These shared engines will be three cylinder power plants. Two gas engiens: a 1.2L and a 1.5L. The MINI will get the 1er's 116i up thru the 120i engines up too 184 PS. The 1.4L diesel engine from the 116d will also be used by MINI.

EnJOY the pics!

Well, I like the new headlights lol, the car also looks much more aggressive overall.

Also, IL4T Turbo instead of IL6 now?

According to the article only the 135i and the 1M will get a six. All the rest will get four bangers. And later one after the intro... the entry level cars will get three bangers!! So... IF you want an NA engine you will get a 3 cyl. All the rest will be turbo motors. I guess that is to meet the new lower CO2 levels for the EU taxes. ?

To understand the importance of the new 1er which will lead BMW’s response to the growth of the small premium compact that the 1er will launch with the highest amount of innovations for a new BMW it will also bring technology normally found on 5er models and upwards.

The recession taught one thing that customers are willing to downsize if their cars offer the same features.

The 1er Sporthatch will launch early next summer prior to it’s official World Premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt , September 2011 and coincide with it’s arrival in the european market.

The Sporthatch will be available as both a 3dr (F21) and 5dr (F20). The next generation 1er Coupe (F22) will launch late 2012, prior to the 1M and the significant launch of BMW’s electric car programme which is similar to the MINI E programme , in which (E82) 1er Coupe eDrive will be used for the evaluation. The 1er cabrio (F23) will arrive in mid 2013.

A year after it’s first launch in the European market BMW will launch their first serious competive hatch and resurrect the Tii badge for a Turbocharged 1er sporthatch in both 3dr and 5dr formats. Power output will be at 240PS and the cars will differ from initial M-Sport aerodynamic packets with stand alone aero packets. They will also be limited in color choice.

To signify the importance of this segment, BMW’s board have approved further designations to increase the 1er platform. The main modular structure of the 1er will also be shared with the new 3er and will allow BMW to build additional models for the 1er and 3er from the same platform. Think of the structure as meccano or lego. Firewalls and suspension mounts can be placed to suit the model whereas the ability to use front wheel drive , rear wheel drive and of course all wheel drive is made easier as is engine placement. MINI will also benefit.

This strategy will allow BMW to increase it’s profit margins for both the 1er and 3er models.

Other such ideas conceived include a 1er Gran Turismo variant which looks more like a sleek X6 shaped five door.

A Compactive Sport Tourer which is like a larger hatch come tourer.

The Z2 which has been designed @ Designworks is coming along it is a unique interpretation of a BMW Roadster. And BMW Board have also approved a Coupe Z2 because of the potential of these two concepts.

Other ideas have included a Gran Coupe type four dr. A shooting Brake in both 3dr and 5dr. A Sedan has been
dismissed within the European market due to BMW’s large European fleet sales which rely on lower engined 3er Sedans and Tourings.

The FWD BMW City Car which is planned as a 3dr first , but initial design ideas have also brought a four dr sedan in the size of the E30 as well as a Roadster.

And the innovative “Y” model a combinationation of “X” meets “Z” which shows that BMW still believe in the ideas seen from the X Coupe.

And of course this time the next generation 2014 1M Coupe will not be an afterthought.

I'm sorry but I can't stand it. I doubt the coupe will look much better. There is too much lines in the hood, kinda like the new 3 too...
Will these be for 2012 models ?

E82 1M will only run for 2 years, maybe 3 years max? I think I'd rather wait then jump on the E82 ship since I already owned one.

Scott,

Will the next 1M feature a six cylinder engine as mentioned in the AutoBild article, or a high strung four cylinder?

I so want the 1M but its going to be out of date even before they bring it out. Kind of like Z4M?

I know it will be an M and all that comes with it but I may be leaning towards new 1er 135i/125d hatch and wait for next 1M in 2014.

Scott, will the M sport be available from launch next year or will that not appear until later as is nornally the case?
Surely it can't come much later as it would be near introduction of Tii spec?

The last sentence says that "BMW will in a few years build as many FWD as RWD cars, and then the competion will not only be with Mercedes but also with companies such as VW".

RWD fans need not to worry I think. The more driver oriented 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and Z series cars will probably all be RWD or AWD. Smaller city and MPV-type cars will be FWD while X-cars will be AWD.

New BMW car designs Looks like a botched face-lift... someone took the "skin" on the face of the car and is pulling it back over the body resulting in random swelling and lumpiness. Especially with all these damned white eyelids. Don't care how many new features or the performance, the thing is just hideous and too organic for me. If it's a badass machine from the future, like a Terminator, give it the personality of one. Audi is starting to get it right... exterior refinement. The new BMWs seem to be about the lumpy, botched-botox look. Damn you Adrian van Hooydonk, you artsy fartsy nut.

Anyway, that's my two cents, not that it matters. Just disappointed. Happy Friday.
