Small Sport Sedan fans bittersweet rejoice. BMW 1-Series sedan speculation

The small sports sedan is an amazing machine that many of us have come up on. The E36 and E46 embody what a small sports sedan should be.

While there have been rumors of a possible 2-Series Gran Coupe to fill those shoes, we still have not seen anything yet. But hope should not be completly lost if a report from Automotive News is to be believed.

Among a deluge of BMW product pipeline information is a small tidbit on the 1-Series:

Quote:
1-series sedan: The 1-series sedan, scheduled to arrive in 2017, will precede the third-generation 1-series hatchback, whose current rwd powertrain will be replaced by fwd. Both will ride on the company's new UKL architecture.
Of course the good comes with the bad, and it seems a sure bet that the car will be FWD on the UKL architecture as has been rumored for quite some time now. But with the only serious options in this segment being the Mercedes CLA and the Audi A3, a FWD 1-Series sedan is better then nothing.

While it's better than nothing, it's not better than an F30 or F22 even though one is too big and the other has two too few doors. FWD is not gonna do it for me.

1-Series M Sedan! You heard it here first, folks.

EDIT: And I just saw the FWD note. First FWD M-car ever? Not out of the question given the times we live in...

FWD is no comparison to RWD. Replacing the platform with FWD will kill the one main feature that those enthusiasts like about the little 1er. Im already out of hte 1 and into a 3 because the 2 s too similar to the 3. Why have a 2 when you can have a 3? I am a little lost with BMWs reasoning on this swap.

It will be available with x-drive. If there's a M, it will be awd for sure. I won't knock it untill we know everything without a doubt.

I honestly don't think I would ever buy a FWD BMW. It defeats the entire reason why I choose BMW's over other brands.

I know BMW/Mini is doing the FWD shared platform to save money. But they are losing a unique selling advantage they had over the competition, making anything under a 3-series FWD biased.

I would say nothing is better. I still have hope for a M2 Gran Coupé... Autonews.com knows nothing. Why is Scott so quiet about the 2 series gran coupé? the rumors were from him.

As long as the awd isn't the same type of system that is found in the CLA (100% fwd until slip is detected), it could be a pretty good car.

If they do this the base models will be FWD, the performance models will be AWD.

Still hoping its not too late for an F2x Gran Coupe but BMW will lose me as a customer if these rumours are true.

Id rather have an Audi Quattro than a FWD 1er/2er.

Well, a 1er sedan would be in line with BMW's stated approach of using odd numbers for sedans. That said, they have several sedans that have even numbers, so who knows? BMW will make and offer what they deem profitable and the buying public will either cotton to it or not.

Personally, so long as the rear seating area is at least as roomy as that of the X1, it'll sell well. Lots of folks would be thrilled to drive a BMW-badged sedan that costs appreciably less than a 3er, especially if it doesn't feel cheaper in performance or interior appointments, fit and finish.

Heck, they could basically make some minor styling updates to the E90, but keeping much of everything else the same, badge it as a 1er -- it is smaller than the F30 -- sell it for something in the upper 20s to mid 30s (BMW have surely recovered their investment in that model, so whatever they make would be pure "gravy") and make a mint and still offer a very nice car.

All the best.

You do know most 1-series owners didn't even know their car was RWD?
