20i 25i 28i?

What's the difference between these engines mechanically? Have they beefed anything up along the way to cope with more power? I'm thinking the 125i is really just a detuned "128i" done so, so the performance difference between that and the m135i is bigger.

Sure I know on a modded car, especially a turbo one you can turn the wick up all you want, but if my car is mechanically set up to be a "128i" and just detuned for marketing reasons.. Well I might be inclined to load software that gives me it's real potential

There isn't a 128i, is there?

It is just 125i or M135i

That's my question also. A year ago, I was convinced there would never come a 125i. Since there is no point at all to deliver exactly the same engine at exactly the same production cost with the same fuel consumption, with a tuned down software just to keep the food chain within your line-up intact. While you abandon the opportunity to shake up the competitive field seriously by not launching a 128i!

Besides, there is still some air between the "virtual" 128i and M135i I guess. Look at the 328i and the 335i, although here the gap is a probably a bit too small. But also here, they have chosen not to have a stronger 335i installed (why!?).

Anyway, I don't like to pay big money, having the idea that they could have opened the tap way more for exactly the same money just to have a defendable position for their top range models.

Same engines, just different software. Besides power, down are emissions and fuel consumption....it is all part of Marketing.

Yep
It's all marketing. 1ER 125i = (2lt) 4 cylinder taxes, insurance, rego etc
In the case of 125i V 328i BMW also changed the exhaust system size on the 125i to detune it, just in case you thought you could achieve the results by just changing the chip or the software.

Fortunately for drivers, there are aftermarket and M Performance options like exhaust systems and M chips to change our already fast 4s into weapons (for those who want it).

It works like this;
Spend money on this model to get more horses and it could cost as much or more as the base model in the higher horse engined car.
EG; add a full exhaust and M chip to a 125i and it will cost nearly as much as a base 135i but have less HP than the 135i
So logic says buy the 135i
However, then your head says 'but I want all these toys included' then it changes the whole game.

My advise; Buy the model you can afford, then if you need more out of it, tinker with it later.

As far as the 1 series f20/21 petrol models go you have the following choice depending on where you live.

114i, 116i and 118i are all 1.6litre twin scroll turbo 4 cylinder with 102, 136 or 170ps. Only differences are software and one piece of exhaust.

125i is 2.0litre twin scroll turbo 4 cylinder with 215ps

135i is 3.0litre twin scroll turbo 6 cylinder with 320ps

Cheers

Everyone keeps on talking about the M performance chip, but is it confirmed that this will be offered?

I have not heard yet, however BMW Performance usually release their 'upgraded' chip about 1 year into a new models life or when a competitor model is released with similar specs, so it is reasonable to assume that it will be out soon after Merc release the A class full AMG A Klass and it is on the roads.
