116i to m135i - possible?
Hi all,
I have a M Sport 116i F20 2014. I am thinking of swapping the engine for the one in the M135i. Is this something feasible and what would be the other components I would need to swap? The build is from Germany but I am thinking of sending this to South Africa to get it done - because it's closer to Mauritius (where I am). Your input is high appreciated regards, Nadeem |

with the right amount of budget everything is possible
I would recommend swapping it for 125i engine since the drivetrain and other components are similar to your 116i. as ovekvam mentioned, even the gearbox is different on m135i |

So I only need to buy a 125i engine? How about the ecu? I read that there is an ecu unit for everything, for example one for the gearbox, etc. Is that correct?
And how about potential problems I might get after the swap? Is there anyone who actually did this at all? |

I'm not aware of anyone doing this. Yes, it will be very complex -- especially if you've not done such things before.

financially a non-starter
I cannot imagine that such a modification would make any financial sense whatsoever. You've got shipping costs, insurance and handling, customs clearance and transport costs...all 2 ways. Then you have labour costs, plus you're ordering all the required items as parts, which is notoriously expensive and you'll end up being left with all the parts you've replaced. Finally, you'll have a car that's simply a modified 116 that most people won't touch when it comes to trade in or replacement and that will be worth a lot less than a standard M135i. Insurance will be a problem, reliability may be an issue......urghhh.
Enjoy your car, wait for a good used M135i then make the trade. You'll be a lot happier |

This would end up being WAY more expensive than actually buying a M135i - even if labor is free.
Resale value will also be horrible (very near that of an original 116i I guess) since it will be a "bastard" and not an original M135i. How about registering and insuring a chassis with that much more power? Forget about this idea asap
