Well I would not have another 1 series. Not that there is anything wrong with it but it's a once owned car.
If I could the next car would be either the new M3 or Jaguar XKR and S version if it was possible. And also if I did not have to drive 20000 miles a year.

Hmmm that's somewhat of a hard question. I would go for a mk7 golf r or an audi s3/s4. For me the issue is horsepower. I feel 300/350bhp is more than enough where I live. If horsepower wasn't an issue, I would go for a gt3

Petrol is about 1,76 €/l but I'm not sure.

Diesel I can find it at 1,58 €/l but average price is 1,62 - 1,65.

Sounds like normal price in most European countries. It is a bit more expensive here in Norway.

You have to compare it with average salary and with the cost of an average house...

this makes sense to me. But an Astra or an Evoque more entertraining than a 120d sounds strange.

But it seems to me that the Lotus itself would be a lot bigger cost issue than the petrol consumption. It is not particularly thirsty, and the Elise is not very comfortable, so I guess you would not rack up all that many kilometers in a year?

You can find a second hand 2series LCI Lotus Elise for 28K€. For different reasons in Italy insurance and others fix costs are cheaper than a 120d. I have only one car, so the number of Km doesn't change if I change car.

But for 28K euro, you can drive 200 000 km. The car is still expensive compared to the fuel. The diesel car is not free per km either.

sorry I don't follow you...

in the second hand market in Italy a 120d Msport cost quite the same as a Lotus Elise 2series LCI. But the Lotus is more thirsty and petrol is more expensive, so if you take in account everything a Lotus is way more expensive tha a 120d Msport.
The result is that in Italy you can see lots of diesel cars and less petrol cars...

If you look at the annual car budget, you will find that the value loss of the car is higher than the cost of fuel (unless you really drive a lot). And the value loss is A LOT higher than the difference in fuel cost between the Lotus and the diesel car. If I was on limited budget, I would rather try to reduce the big value loss than the difference in fuel cost. As in buying a cheaper car.

In Norway, the electric cars have significantly reduced taxes, so they are among the best selling cars now. BMW i3, Tesla Model S, Nissan Leaf and electric Golf are all selling very well.

I agree, I'm on the fence regarding the Evoque, I feel it's the type of car that I would buy for my wife and will enjoy driving from time to time.

As for the Astra, I think he's going for power there.

Guys, what I am trying to say is the car does not make me grin, it's just boring to drive, I don't get all the hype over the BMW brand, sure it looks good but that's all. Had the Astra mk v from new and has 3 years of hassle free motoring, the car was fun to drive and very nimble. The 1 series has had many faults as I write now it,s in the local garage for faults as long as my arm, they give me a 3 series to drive around in and this to is dull.

Maybe I am not a BMW man

Probably not. I have driven some Astra rental cars, and it felt really good to get back to the BMW. Front wheel drive can be really annoying, and the ergonomics around the driver fits me a lot better in the one series.

The new 3 series (F30) is awuful, i drove it for two months and got rid of it. If you're used to the FWD rush I get it. FWD drive cars are harder to drive at the limit and there is a different sensation to being pulled (feels faster) I owned my share of modified GTIs so I get it. I think you should try the 135i, I'm not sure how much power the 120 puts down. The 135 may not be ideal for your needs when it comes to gas consumption but it's a really fun car to drive.

Interesting. Why do you like the M235i more? The looks?
To me it seems like a less practical edition of the same car at a higher price.

Mainly looks yes, and I can still get a decent trade-in value for the hatch. I have other more practical cars for hauling things so the practicality of a hatch is not very important.
I've had three hatches in a row (206RC->MkVR32->M135i) so a small RWD coupe is rather appealing to me at the moment .
