Hmm, in my opinion, they sound similar only when idling. Once you get rolling with them the petrol sounds much better. And also, you get almost 2000 extra rpm's with the petrol, and the sound on the top end really sets them apart.

Of course, none of them sound anything like an i6...

Thanks a lot, I have one question for you... What is your comsumption usually??

Take a look at what I have readen in an article about a 118i test drive:
"With a petrol engine as good as the 118i, the case for the diesel is significantly diminished. Power is up, the torque gap has narrowed, and the fuel consumption advantage of the diesel hauled back"

Hmm, around town i get 10-11l/100km, and on the motorways around 7l/100km. But bear in mind that I'm in Brazil, and here our petrol has 25% ethanol in it, therefore the fuel consumption is significantly worse.

Do you have a special version of the engine since you can run E25? Our car states that it can run E10 maximum.

Agree, at idle they both have high pressure direct injection noise but after that they are worlds apart.

Cheers

Si has leído bien mi mensaje, digo que tras unos momentos (10, 15 segundos) el rumor diesel desaparece y suena gasolina 100%... Como dice otro forero, sólo ocurre en frío al arrancar, y el sonido no tarda nada en cambiar...

Which is exactly my point. The diesel noise vanishes in a few seconds...

Thanks a lot. Could you tell us about your consumption? I have a doubt between 118i and 118d, I make about 25000 km a year, so diesel option is more logical, but in the other hand I want to forget noises and vibrations of diesel,, a difficult quiz!

I'm not actually sure there are any modifications to the engines destined to Brazil, but the service intervals here are significantly shorter - my car asked to have its oil changed at only 4000km!

7 l/100 after 11.000 kms. 80% in motorways & A roads (legal speed), 20% city traffic. Making 25.000 kms/year I wouldn't go for diesel. That's the limit, above that, I'd think about it seriously.
