When the cars equipped with B48's (230, Mini Cooper S, X1) start turning 200k with zero engine issues or everything connected to it directly or indirectly having to be repaired or replaced I'll gladly buy one instead of a toyota as basic/entry level DD wheels

The problem is that the engine is considerably more expensive to manufacture than the 1.8l 4 pot currently in use in the corolla which defeats the purpose of an inexpensive entry level vehicle thats reliable

I don't think I would buy a Toyota with BMW engine if there is too much technology. They are supposed to be super reliable, and that is the main reason why people buy them.

I sold my Grand Cherokee and was looking for a big SUV initialy. I considered buying a Toyota (ended with a small x1 as I said before). In fact, I wanted Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2.8d, testdrove it. This toyota is all good but the engine. It is a) slow on acceleration b) slow on pedal responce. Gas options (ancient 2.7) are even worse.

I would not buy toyota with bmw engine embedded, but I love to see some bmw(aka modern) tech implemented by toyota.

s14 and m43 are the exceptions from the rule : Bmw is all about 6 cyl engine.

Ok... so you really meant... just for Thrice .. instead of " just for once " when you said that

BMW is about 3,4, 6, 8,10, and 12 cylinder engines... not to mention motor cycle motors ...

it's BMW "fans" that are " all about the 6"

I gander that the reason for this joint venture is because Toyota is going to continue its focus on hybrid & hydro powertrain development & is outsourcing the next gen ICE to BMW

I'm not sure that this is a good idea for Toyota... going with "things in general here." Suppose the BMW motor is just as reliable as a Toyota sourced motor. All motors have wear items that eventually needs to be replaced. Let's say you need a new valve cover gasket. On the current Corolla the replacement cost is running between $100 - $150 (according to repair pal). On a BMW 328i (which has a 2.0 liter turbo inline 4) the repair cost is estimated to be $649 - $959. Why the difference in cost you might ask? Well if you dig into the repair manuals replacing the valve cover on the BMW engine is much more complicated due to the way BMW designed the engine. On the Corolla you simply remove some bolts, take the valve cover off, scrape the gasket off, clean the valve cover, put a new gasket on, put the valve cover on and torque the bolts to spec. On the BMW engine you have to remove high pressure fuel rails, remove air intake hoses, remove bolts and throw away (bolts are torque to yield and cannot be reused, they are like $10 - $20 each, there are a bunch of them) etc. etc. A Corolla owner is going to be pretty surprised with the cost of a simple valve cover replacement. Maybe BMW can make slight alterations to customer engines that makes maintenance easier / cheaper but I'm not sure that they would bother.

Will not affect the US market. Will continue in Europe where it already has been without complaint, conspiracy or paranoia.

In regards to FWD. BMW projected 600,000 combined BMW/MINI FWD units by 2020. As it stands combined sales so far is around half that projection.
And with 2017 introducing the MINI Countryman and the BMW 1er Sedan. 2017 is expected to be closer still. But with more models coming before 2020. 600,000 units is expected to be surpassed earlier than initially projected.

It would be cool to see the GT86 with a 2-liter turbo. Or a Corolla hatchback with the same engine and AWD. Subaru got dominant in this segment after Mitsubishi quit the affordable sports car segment.

p.s.: calm down guys... it's ok to differ in opinions... Just don't judge the other person

Fantastic news, if the goals are reached without a FWD 1 Series you don't need it! And then it can stay like it is, the best driving hatch in class!

So do I - how does that give you inside info?, and this makes no sense. Why give away margin on such a high volume product? And BMW is no low cost supplier... I call BS on this one. What facility do we have in Knoxville? I'm at HQ

Dude this info is from general auto industry publications. It's not a big secret regarding toyota's and bmw's future partnership and what each party can gain from each other
