Bmw Creaking turns out to be missed weld point
I own one of the last BMW 120d m sport xdrives to role of the production line before the new model,
After having problems with creaking which the dealership put down to door seals and after cleaning them from impurities and then applying there BMW lubrication the noise persisted they took parts of my car apart baring in mind it's only 12 weeks old so you can imagine how annoyed I was to find that the creaking was down to a robot on the manufacturing line missing a weld point which is causing the metal frame work to creak and sounded like the car was being twisted and put under much strain when cornering to the left, the issue has now been passed on to BMW UK that have launched an investigation into it Anyone else having similar problems |

Thanks for the heads up.
I had this on my 2012 1 series coming out of my driveway but my 2015 1 series pre face lift is ok and auctorial very tight. I've been told the 2015 cars were built to the new face lift standard. I know the interior comes with a sim card, free map updating, updated dash time location to right side of dash and HD screen. It may be the robot had a breather when your car showed in front of him. I know BMW will fix or replace your car. My 2014 1 series was replaced free because of on going issues. Anything which is built will have problems at some time it's just how BMW handles the problem which makes a company great or poor.

Maybe they can weld it manually. As for the theory about the robot having a breather, I have my doubts. Robots are rather dutiful by nature. If it missed a welding point on one car, it has probably missed it on other cars as well. They are fairly consistent in their work.

there could be more than one weld point missing as the creaking is coming from many different parts of the car, and they do believe that there could be more cars involved but may be unaware of the creaking as I'm very picking with things like that

I am really surprised
The 1er is built in a new German facility which has a very good reputation The fact that this was not picked up by the robot's monitoring systems or during the final check of the vehicle is very unusual. Probably a singular event, as fluid line pressures are monitored on each robot, it had to be a power issue in the welding head that caused a weld malfunction. Not sure what vehicle manufacturing laws you have there, but you should find out if this failure is in the 'critical safety cell structure'. If it does you may have a case for total replacement of the vehicle by BMW. |
