Too bad the hurricane party is at my house. So that'll be no dog, money, daughters, i8/M2's or overweight verts for you.

140 mph winds are no joke in terms of seeking safety. But it's no where near throwing trucks like straw.

Should make for some pretty gnarly swells if anyone wants to meet up and hit the surf?

Repeating what I heard. However, after a quick search I found these examples:

Quote:
Hurricane Andrew has sustained winds of 140 mph. Here is the impact of high winds on the human body, according to Professor Hans Hornung of the California Institute of Technology:

* A hand held outside a car window at 70 mph is subjected to one-quarter the force of 140 mph winds.

* A person could lean at a 45-degree angle into a 70 mph wind without falling.

* It is impossible to walk into an 80 mph wind without support from a hand railing or some other structure.

* At 120 mph, a flying object such as a tree limb or lawn chair becomes lethal.

* A person caught in a 130 mph wind would be lifted off the ground.

* A 160 mph wind is equal to 600 pounds of drag force.

I've driven 140 MPH before. It's scary. Sticking hand out of window is a challenge.

People are out right now surfing in Ft Lauderdale and Hollywood beach. Nuts! Getting pretty rainy and windy in Miami. Palm Beach area is really in for it :-/

The most interesting if not alarming thing I keep hearing (which makes TONS of sense) is this:

People who knowingly ignore the mandatory call to evacuate, are not only putting themselves in mortal danger but the lives of first responders as well!

Also... They point out this fact: If your power goes out completely and you are being pounded at that very moment, how in the hell can you seriously expect help and aid at that very moment???

Common sense people... Use some.

I agree. Anything north of Pompano should be a ghost town.

What people don't realize as well is that as hurricanes move north, they tend to pick up speed exponentially. What could be a storm moving at 3 -8 mph for a week straight can quickly jump up to 35mph. And while that still seems slow, 35mph can often reach your location faster than you expect. It's usually not stopping for gas or bathroom breaks.

The bold really stood out, I'm sure we can all agree that getting pounded in the dark wouldn't be a good time.....

On a serious note, there's always going to be people who aren't going to evacuate, hell a lot don't have anywhere TO go, nor have the money to just up and leave if even for only a day to a couple days. Then you have the group that is stubborn and will just sit it out, regardless of who else will have to be involved because they don't want to go.

I hope so, though at this moment it's sunny in Kendall. Everything is closed here in Miami.

I'd be getting away from the Titusville area if I lived there. Yikes.

Hope they have things tied down at NASA. Titusville is going to get slammed. I wonder where the cruise ships are.

Reminds me of vaccines. While you may think it's ok to get sick, you get the vaccine for herd immunity so as not to spread it to the young, elderly or immunocompromised.

Same can be said for evacuations. Get out to protect yourself, but also to alleviate the burden you may place on others. Obviously there are some who physically or financially may be unable to leave. But if you have the means, go.
