M Performance Automobiles vs. Standard Vehicles with M Performance Parts
I recently had a debate with someone about MPA (M Performance Automobiles) and MPP (M Performance Parts).
As I know, MPP are just parts that can be added to standard vehicles such as 1-series, 3-series, 5-series, and M-series as well. MPA is a brand new range between BMW's M-Power models and the standard vehicles. This range includes M550d, X5 M50d, X6 M60d, M135i, and the latest M235i. My questions are: - Do these MPAs use any of the M Performance technology? - How do they compare to standard vehicles equipped with MPP? - What exactly does the M Performance department do? - Do they have any relationship with the M GmbH? That "someone" keeps saying standard vehicles with MPP are the true "MPAs" and they are far better than MPA (He thinks a normal 135i + MPP is better performance than M135i). In my opinion, this makes no sense at all. Just curious how you guys think about? |

my friend got the 118i and there is not much difference on the road.. unless you drag race a lot lol i would go with 116i with options.. but thats just me |

I don't think it matters TBH. An MPA car is a step above a normal car even if the normal car has been kitted out with M Performance parts.
You can make a std car go faster than an real M car, but it'll never be an M car. I think the same with the new 'mid' MPA cars. They are a stepping stone to full M cars, or for those who feel M cars are a little too much. If you have std car and spec it up (going to cost ££) to be better than an MPA, why not get an MPA car in the first place.

Some of the performance parts are better than the stock parts delivered on the M performance cars. One example is the Performance brakes. They are "better" than the M Sport brakes.

More on the subject, I think the performance parts are there to spice up your car, whether its a std model (120d, 118i,...) or an MPA such as M135i. A lot of M performance parts are just for looks, others can add to the driving experience such as the steering wheel, brakes, seats,... Either way, your car stays as you bought it, you cant turn a 120d into an M135i...

I don't remember exactly. It was either that the rotor material was different (lightweight), or that they were actually larger. They are also significantly more expensive. I think the answer is here in the forum somewhere. There is a lot of conflicting info about them on internet, so it is not so easy to say for sure.

Front discs are larger on the MPP ones. Rears are slotted/grooved. Which makes them better as well. I believe calipers are identical.
MPP are parts to enhance our cars. MPA are BMW's that are enhanced and not offered in 'normal' mode. You won't get a regular F2x 135i or a F1x 550d. Compared to a regular F2x the M135i has standard M-Sport brakes, lighter wheels (I guess?) and better tyres (unless you option runflats). That's about it. Oh yeah, standard M-pack bumpers (front bumper without foglights as all M(-Performance) cars and grey coloured mirror covers). BMW creates M-Performance cars when there is no regular version. There is no comparison possible. |

It is just a matter of taste and finances
'M' is 'M' yet some people feel compelled to even 'trick' them up. I do think M Performance Parts make a standard BMW better. Done sensibly, they can provide a great look and drive on a budget. We (BMW threads) all love a real 'M' car, however the general population do not care, most just see nice looking BMWs. Most BMW buyers who have a budget, consider a 'M' Sport version of their chosen model as it offers looks and a higher degree of drivability than the standard model. If it has M performance (and/or other tuners) options fitted, it can deliver them greater driving pleasure at an affordable value. The options that should be ticked on the list of a new non 'M' car that make a difference in drivability M Sport package Sport auto (paddles) 'M sport brakes' for all driving or 'M performance Brakes' if you like track driving [who doesn't]. Choose whatever 'you' like after that ----> The 'M' Division always comes up with the 'engineered' beast |

Possible.. I don't feel one bit of difference on that end between my 125d and my dad's M135i. We both have the ZF 8speed sportauto, so can't tell anything on the gearbox

If this is correct, can people with the M Sport brakes install the drilled brake disks?

It says "For vehicles with M Sport brakes, Alternate part: Original BMW Accessories" So I guess it should fit? They are the same size as the regular M-Sport disks. |
