NEw 116ED

Hi, I have been following this forum for a couple of months now, it has been a helped to keep me going whilst I have been waiting for my 116ED to arrive!

I picked up my car at the end of March after a two month wait and all I can say is that, after taking a leap of faith that the ED would match the 116D Sport that I test drove, it has definately exceeded expectations. I cannot tell the difference between the two (apart from no Sport+ mode on the ED).

With 550 miles on the clock, driving mainly in Eco Pro mode, the car is getting 58mpg based on 2/3 Country and A roads and 1/3 motorways. The car pulls well and is spritely enough, although you have to work harder at overtaking than the 120d that I nearly bought after the test drive in that!

I am blown away by the Nav and iPhone integration (I didn't get the snap in adapter) as everything except for Plug In (iPod interface on iDrive) works and £164 for that one function didn't seem worth it.

I have the car in for detailing today, I can post pictures later if anyone is interested...

Spec as follows:
F20 116d Efficient Dynamics
Mineral Grey
Driver Comfort Package with front PDC
Interior Comfort Package
Visibility Package
Professional Multimedia
Through Loading System
Internet
DAB Radio
Telephone USB Interface (6NF)
Enhanced Bluetooth (6NL)
Moble Application Preparation (6NR)
Full Black Panel

Hey there.

Congratulations on your new car!

I also ordered a 116D ED.. You are the first who actually compared the normal 116D and the ED version.

I've read some rumors about people complaining that the engine would be underpowered in second gear and slow at overtaking on the highway. How do you feel about that ?

Would love to see your pictures!!

Thanks.

Second gear is not brilliant although tend not to use it too much. I've found that over taking is fine, although sometimes you need to drop a gear. The car doesn't feel any different to the normal 116d but it is two months since I drove one and I haven't compared the two side by side.

All in all, the handling is great and I was looking for efficiency with a 100 mile round trip to work and diesel prices what they are, so I'm very pleased with it as I am already 25mpg better off than my old car (Lexus IS220D).

Here are some pictures, the lighting was poor so the xenons and rear LED lights don't show at their best!

Hey Daccomm,

I ordered a 116d ED too
One question: I also took the 6NR smartphone option for music. But I actually want the PlugIn iPod menu on my screen, do I need another option to get that?

Hi Pieter
With a normal iPod cable you can see music and playlists. For plug in you would need the snap in media adapter.

For my current BMW 1 I have the old navigation system and I use an Y-cable to get the songs on the screen, but in my new 116 I'll have a new navi Profesionnal. So if I understand you correct, when I buy one of those media snap-in adapters (about 180 euro), I can see the typical iPod menu?

Pieter, I dont get that screen. I think that that is what you need the snap in adapter for, it is not available with the normal iPod cable.

Cheers,
D

Using the y splitter cable from BMW you can control your iPod / iPhone from the screen, even with non nav idrive

I can control the iPod and play music with the normal Apple iPod cable, but, I don't get the iPod interface shown in the link above (plugin).

Ah ok cheers Daccomm :-) probably I will have to buy the snap in adapter then or add the BMW Apps option to my list. I'll ask my dealer

I completely agree the engine is fine. I'm completely stunned that people think it's lame. They must have forgotten to put in the SPORT mode, because it got a torque of 260 NM in sport. (the same as the old 2.5 litres inline R6 on a 525 E39)
I very satisfied with the car, and doesn't have any problems overtaking.

Best Regards
Lars

Wheels

I have just ordered a F20 116 ED. I would like to have some light alloy wheels, but when I look at BMWs homepage is sais on all 17,18 and 19-inch:

"Not for 116d BMW EfficientDynamics edition"

Is it correct that I can't buy any wheels for this car?

You can buy whatever wheels you like, the issue is just, as far as I am informed by the local dealer, that the ED version has wheels that are "optimised" for fuel efficiency i.e. smaller width + other rims. That doesn't mean that you cannot fit other rims, just that the car will not live up to the task of being "ED" hence BMW cannot fit those wheels from the factory.

My example: My 118d "SE" has a mixed number of 22,7 km/l where the sport or urban is 22,2km/l - this is among other things due to the wheels being 195 wide on the "SE" and 205 on the Sport and Urban. This 0,5km/l difference will in Denmark mean 600dkr (ca. 80€) more in road tax pr year. Therefore I had to "retrofit" wider wheels rims in order not to get the "penalty" of higher road tax.
I don't know whether it will influence on the tax you have to pay in your country even if you retrofit the wheels though..
Oh and btw - I hope this is okay to mention - I ordered my 17 inch 379 style originals from leebmann24 and saved 25% compared to my local BMW dealer - just wanted to share that bit of info

The 116d ED is tuned to economy. Larger wheels increase driving resistance and by that also the consumption figures.
But like you I wonder why they do not have this option.
Suggestion: Save the 16" for winter use and buy aftermarket wheels in 17" for summer.

Thanks, that is also what I've planned to do. But I would prefer M Performance Doppelspeiche 405 19 inch. I am used to drive with 19 inch.
