rear brake wear made worse by cruise control
so my 116d with 5000 miles on it says it needs rear pads in just 12000 miles.
yet, my colleague's 116i that i was looking around today, which has 1200 miles, claims that there are 23000 miles left in their rear brakes. now mine has cruise, and his doesn't. mewonders if the constant feathering of the brakes by the cruise is to blame for the shockingly low life of my brakes compared to his? any thoughts? 17000 miles for a set of brakes is shocking to be honest |

I don't think 17000 miles for a set of brake pads is shocking. I have seen sets of pads being worn out in one afternoon, and I am impressed when a set of brake pads makes it through a season.

I am sure it has to do (alot) with the activation of the DSC and DTC, since these 2 systems are based mainly on the rear brakes.
When I bought my car, the CBS was showing 50.000 kms for both front and rear brake pads. Now, after 13.000 kms the CBS indicates 70.000 kms (!!!!) for front pads (have NO idiea how on earth this happened....maybe the pads are regenerating...LOL!!) and 22.000 kms for rear pads. The DSC (antispin mainly) works overtime around the area I live, since we have very slippery roads.

I have a faint memory of someone on this forum posting a similar issue where the pads needed replacement after very low mileage. Think it was just a bug/error with the sensors/idrive reading and reporting wrong.
Don't know what mine says... gonna have a look. Guess it could be accurate aswell, depends on how you drive. I strongly doubt the cruise control has anything to do with it. ovekvam, impressed with a set of pads making it through one season?! wtf with alot of track-days sure, but not under normal driving. |

There is an known issue with the rear pad sensors (as Wolz has mentioned). Same as with the coolant warning coming up incorrectly.
Mine showed 19000km to replacement after the first 2000km of very light driving, while the front ones showed 48000km. |

Yes, there seems to be a problem with the sensors on some cars over calculating the wear rate on the rears. As mentioned, the activation of the DSC and DTC, can apply extra pressure on each of the rear brakes during dymanic driving, however this would not create that amount of wear under normal driving. I would suggest having them checked by your dealer's technician. They can measure the actual pad wear.

OK so this is a known fault? do we have a consensus that 17000 miles from a set of brakes is abnormally low?
I guess when the check control says I need them replacing I can get BMW to take a look and see if they actually DO need replacing |

It all depends on your driving style.
It is a trade off, have some fun whilst driving and pay early or drive sensibly you should get 35K+ out of them. Agressive driving will shorten the life dramatically. A friend with a new M5 went through a set of brakes and tyres in 6,000Km. He is a GOM(grumpy old man)racer. He has to beat everyone off at the lights, hard braking and throws it into corners to show how good it is. He bitched about the cost, however it hasn't slowed him down. Our nick name for him is 'Fangio' |

Or just look at it over the wheel. You can see the amount of remaining pad easily...
