Fitting a new steering wheel

Hi

I know the M135i steering wheel is great to hold, but in seeking something a bit different, I am looking at fitting an F30 M sport steering wheel. It reminds me of an old M steering wheel on an E30 I had many years back, as well as the steering wheel of the Z8, that I never had, and frankly I like it.

Firstly, does anyone know of any reason why this wouldn't work? I cant think of any, but thought the knowledge of the forum would be good to check this.

Secondly, can anyone confirm whether the M135i European spec has a single or dual stage airbag? As much as I search, I cannot be sure, but think European cars generally use single stage. I am told if there is only a black cable going to the airbag then its single stage, and if its black and green then its 2 stage, but since I haven't had the wheel off, I don't know yet.

Thanks for the help

Anthony

Thanks, I looked at that video, but couldn't be sure from the wires, whether it was dual or single stage, which is why I posted the question. But I am guessing by the lack of response, its not such a common issue.

Convinced

Dear Hwelvaar and Spree

Thanks, with this combination of information I am basically convinced it will work. I will let you know how I get on.

I'd love to see a picture when done. That new m sport wheel is better than the standard one.

Knowing BMW, I would be very surprised if the wheel will fit and work properly
Usually they change something like the shaft's spline (number of teeth or taper etc)
You could be lucky with your M135i as it has M input

Well done in finding that. That's all the proof I need. Now to justify the cost.

Is it a normal plug and play? Or do you have to program anything so that all the functions work?

No programming is necessary. Just plug and pray.

Does anyone know the cost all in? Roughly? £500? £1000?

well, the wheel is around 300, the airbag is around 700, plus all the other little bits and bobs like multifuncition controls ~60, trim ~60 and wiring ~10 id say around 1200, if brought from BMW.

I did this with my old E90, swapped out the original wheel for M-Sport, cost me around 600. But sourced my parts from elsewhere. Airbag cost the most at 300. That was when the car was fairly old (56plate in 2009). So keep in mind that this car and the parts are new, and will be harder to get from outside of stealer

So, finally I got round to trying to fit the F30 sport wheel into the M135i. It took me an age to get the airbag out, but I think with practice it is easy.

Then I saw that there were 4 wires from the old airbag, green and purple, and black and blue, and only 2 on the new airbag.

The wires then disappear into a heap of wiring in the old wheel, and then there are 2 sockets which actually connect to the car. Those 2 sockets look the same between the old and new wheel, but I am now too nervous to make the change, as I suspect it is a 2 stage air bag, which will then set the warning light off.

So, right now, the old wheel remains on, and I am a bit confused as to whether to make the change or not. Any suggestions?

Ok, so a big thanks to rrzwarte for giving me the necessary push to unplug the old bag and put on the new one. And, hey presto, no lights.

I personally like the look of this wheel over the standard M135i one, but its only a personal opinion.

I think I have attached a picture, if not, I will try again
