Cruise control retrofit - your advice/experience

Guys,

I made a huge mistake by not including cruise control among my f20's factory options. The multifunction wheel has the LIM button so I am told that a retrofitted cruise may be possible.

Here are the components to it: the part, the coding and the work needed.

Cruise control part: I have found the piece on eBay for 200 Euro. My official BMW dealer can also order it for 200 Euro.

Coding: I have asked a "remote coder" (someone who connects to your car remotely though a windows laptop and internet) and his price is fair (50 Euro). My dealer asks 250 Euro for the coding (!!).

Work: I have found a guy who knows how to intall the part it but he's hesitant about the coding (he does not know how to use e-sys but he says there is other software). My dealer will ask some 200 Euro (!)

The problem here is that NOONE knows if the coding will work or not. Not even my dealer, who is told by the electrician that "the car must be left coding all night". The remote coder says it can activate it easily, but he cannot guarantee it will work. The guy at the garage says he can try but has never coded a F20 before.

What is your experience in coding it? is it done with the touch of a button or does it require leaving the car coding for several hours?

I would appreciate your advice/experience.

Alex

I think you can do coding different ways. For home use in the garage, options can be changed quickly. The BMW dealers have other guidelines, and will typically upgrade ALL software in the entire car to the appropriate version, which can take quite a few hours.

Thank you ovekvam.

I talked to my dealer and he now says that the black panel display (behinf the wheel) also needs to be replaced. I said that I have the full balck panel display as the car is equipped with with professional navigation, but he insisted that it anyway needs to be changed, as the cuise control sign has to light up.

Can anyone confirm that the black panel display also needs to be changed?

There is an extended black panel option on the F20. I have cruise control without this option. The default panel does indeed show information about the cruise control setting, but that should be a software issue, not something to do with the panel itself?

My dealer has not seen the car so far. He only knows its configuration. The car has extended black panel (it is needed by the professional GPS option) and I would be very surprised if it did not include the cruise control symbol (actually I can spot it greyed out, I think). I think my dealer is simply misinformed.

I think the panel can draw whatever symbol the software tells it to, just like a computer screen.

I am talking about the green symbol which lights up in green when cruise control is activated. I can see it greyed out in mine, that is why I dont understand my dealer.

I don't think I have such a symbol in my car. There is a green LED somewhere along the speedometer scale, and the selected speed written on the panel below. But then again I don't have the extended black panel option. The cruise control works fine without it.

Maybe you should ask the guy behind this Youtube video:

If my brief knowledge of Italian is correct, he has done exactly the same thing you want to do.

Yes, that is exactly it. It shows the non-extended black panel but the green pilot with the cruise control symbol is the same. In addition, he says that it can be activated in all F20 or F30 as long as there is a LIM button in the wheel.

I think I am going to order the part on eBay and then have it installed by a non-official dealer, then find someone willing to code it.

Again, your experience/opinion is very welcome.
