DAB upgrade for existing buyers

BMW emailed me yesterday, and informed me that all new cars from Jan onwards will have dab as standard, and that i can upgrade my car to DAB for £299 inc parts and labor.

They said it integrates with the dash screen, and has a discrete antenna fitted to the windscreen.

Anyone any thoughts on this- is it the same as factory fitted?

DAB costs € 233,- in Holland(Factory fitted) and I didn't order it, but what's about that antenna and why can't they fit it into the shark antenna?

Cheers

BMW are using the auto dab system to upgrade cars without factory dab.

The exact same kit is £127 in Halfords. Fitting is a further £29.99

Is it really that much better mate? I would rather buy the alpine upgrade and pump my own tunes instead of searching the radio lookin for a tune i like.

Good info Lee. I don't like the fact that the aerial isn't that invisible. If you want a better choice of stations that Halfords kit is worth it.

Interesting...

I was planning on adding DAB as an extra when ordering my F21 in the coming weeks. It's currently the top article on the BMW news page, wonder when the price books will update to reflect this and save me £295!

DAB is free, but the price of the car has gone up around £500 so you'd actually be out of pocket in 2013!!

Ah ok I'd not spotted the price increase, I'll stick to DAB as an extra then!

Didn't bother with dab cause signal where I live is not that great (as my bro has it on his X6 and was telling me) by the time is is worth having I will be ready for a change and it will be standard factory fit by then. I put the money toward VSS instead and have to say im getting used to the quick rack, BUT if you have never had it I don't think you would miss it and once you have had it... Can't imagine not having it!

I selected DAB because I think the car can be difficult to sell without it.

Regarding the variable steering rack, you call it a quick rack. Is it actually quicker overall? How many turns do you have lock to lock? I am pretty sure it is slower around the middle, where you use it most.

The DAB retrofit is a dirty and clunky thing.

For a start it's not actually integrated like they suggest, it's all controlled by a seperate remote and that "small" aerial on the window actually transmits the received digital signal over a short wave FM signal to the standard radio.

Naff eh?

I used to help out www.sextons-portsmouth.co.uk (free plug ) and many BMW dealers used to get us to do the reverse, DAB, DVD, etc upgrades as it was cheaper for them and the customer...
