BMW f20 M sport suspension.

Does anyone have this suspension on their f20? Is the ride too stiff/firm? What are your experiences? I live in the UK and I am wondering if the ride is too firm for the roads here. I test drove a sport BMW f20 and like the ride so I am hoping the m sport suspension set up isn't too different.

Hi, I had m-sport springs on the 2010 116d and it was a tough and hard-drive trip. For our F 20 I went for the standard springs.

Thanks. I'm hoping that with this being the new 1 series it won't be as tough as previous generations. Maybe I'm wrong.

On the F20, you can order adaptive M sports suspension as an option. Then it offers both comfort and sport suspension.

You could always go for the adaptive suspension if your budget stretches that far.... get the best of both worlds!

Thanks. I did consider this but I'm not sure it's worth the additional cost. Also I am thinking of keeping the car long term and imagine that this is likely to be expensive to repair or replace when it becomes faulty. I also considered removing m sport suspension but that would be pointless as we are ordering f20 120d m sport.

I think you can order m-sports pack with the loss of sport springs. Talk to your dealer.

Before I ordered the F20, I test drove a car at the dealer with the M suspension option. It was not at all too stiff, and to my judgement easy to live with every day.
After the test drive I was not in doubt about ordering an M sport

Thanks. I'm glad to hear that you believe it's easy to live with every day as this was my concern. What was the car you test drive with m suspension?

I have m sports (passive) on my f20 with 18"s and find it fine day to day, only really notice the stiffness with pot holes and speed bumps. If I lived in the country with bumpier roads I would have gone with standard, our roads are smooth and I have no issues.

When you say passive do you mean standard m sport suspension? I take it you are referring to uk roads. Did you test drive a f20 sport? How does it compare to the drive of that. Is it very different or not much different. I test drove f20 sport and liked the test drive but have opted for f20 m sport and am worried the suspension will feel very different.

I've got 118i with M suspension, I was afraid it was to stiff but it's just perfect.
Now I have the 16' winter tires, but in the summer will change to 17'

I would imagine that the ride would be quite different with the larger wheels or have you not tried with the larger wheels yet?

The car I tested was a 118i with 17" rims, which I pushed really hard around the corners. I found it perfect, also for daily driving.

I am very aware of the "dangers" by overdoing the wheel size (potholes etc.) so I believe the standard (for M sport) 17" rims are a perfect compromise between looks, comfort and sportiness.

By ordering the 120d M sport with M suspension I am confident having found a perfect daily driver

Thanks for your response. The 120 d m sport comes with 18" alloys. The dealers convinced me not to have the m sport suspension removed as they said it will be fine. Hope they are right.

@Sol01: Remember the new 1 series has a more comfortable set up than the former generation - even with sport suspension. So they are not totally comparable.

I have M-Sport with 18in on my E81, on our roads in the North of England (which are abysmal), it can be really harsh. The first time i went over one of the many thousands of pot holes we have, I thought I'd broken something. It's a shame because the car looks awesome and on a smooth b road it feels like its on rails.

On my F20 I've not ordered it.

Let's hope it's not as firm on the f20.

correct, which is also what I said but I also think AS1000 should test drive the car before ordering it. people have different perception regarding ride comfort and whilst I find mine perfectly reasonable, wife thinks its too hard and gives her headache on long drives. Test drive is specially important when it comes to ride comfort rather than seeking for answers on the forum if you get my drift what is not clear with AS1000 is that I don't know how long his/her journeys are? also if he/she test drove F20 sport line and liked the ride why order F20 M sport. I assume looks got a lot to do with it but you can still omit M sport suspension if you choose to and get the rest of goodies that comes with it
Thanks. I have already ordered the m sport. Looks did play a part and I couldn't test drive the m sport as it is not available yet. Although i do have a few days to change options on the car which is why I was asking about the suspension. My driving will be a mixture of motorway and town driving.

I tested drive f20 both standard suspension and m sport suspension. Standard is too soft like the boat, I prefer m sport as it still offer better ride comfort than my 09 corolla

Looking forward to hear your impressions! I ordered my own car with M-Sport package and M-sport suspension - not the adaptive one.
I figure the M shocks and spings are more like heavy duty parts than the adaptive ones, since the adaptive is also ment to work in soft and comfortable mode.
Hence my question: How sporty is the adaptive suspension?
