Can't wait to see this thing in the MINI. The current MINI engines sort of lack that BMW feel so by sharing a platform with the 1er, the next-gen MINI might even be better and fun than the current R56 - smoother engine and go-kart like handling!

I am under the understanding this is a BMW made block exclusively. And has zero connection to the engine family you are referring to.

The 3-cylinder engine is all BMW, but the F20 four cylinder twin scroll turbo engine I have is pretty much the same engine you find in a Mini. It was built by BMW and Peugeot together.

Yeah I'd want to have the N20 IF there was a clear choice, but you guys get all the engine choices.

Awesome stuff, I think its great that all of the motors share a lot of parts, ultimately this (should) make maintenance and repairs easier on technicians and in the end less expensive for the owners...

Bring them on!

If they can eliminate vibrations these engines woud be a great choice for a small vehicle!

Whats not to like?

BMW have several manufacturer benefits. Customers might get some of those as well (lower price, easier for shops to repair and have spare parts too)

Customer benefits over 4-cylinder
-Lower fuel consumption (and lower Co2 taxes for some countries)
-Better sound. Sportier sound! (More like a 6 cylinder)
Two big arguments for me!

Performance
-Lower weight
-Better weight distribution

Other:
-Maybe easier to work in the engine bay as well with all that space..

BMWs 1,6 sylinders have proved to be great. I don't think cutting down on 1 cylinder and only 0,1l displacement volume will make it worse with the modern technology.

Please put these engines in ALL lower powered 2-series!

I have read some reviews of the 3-cylinder engine prototype in the F20, and it doesn't vibrate more than a diesel four. People don't seem to mind the diesel vibrations, so I guess it should be okay. Besides, the production version will probably be further refined.

Thanks for the engine code, mapezzul. I guess I figured BMW would be moving all of their engines to a new scheme. N37 seems more in keeping with the older scheme. Personally, I think they should drop the "B**" part entirely, and just call the engines N15 (I3), N20 (I4), N30 (I6) and N40 (V8). There's only a single displacement for each one now, and that isn't likely to change any time soon given the desire to keep all cylinders the same dimensions going forward.

Anyway, if this will be used for the 114i only then how are they going to position the *16 and *18 N13 models which make less than the 175hp the I3 is easily capable of? Will they simply detune the I3 to ridiculously low power? The current 114i only makes 102hp, the 116i and 316i are at 136hp, and the 118i is at 170hp.

Again, it still does not make any sense to me for them to keep the I3 exclusive to the very lowest end vehicles only, when clearly it could replace the N13 wholesale. I don't expect the N37 and N13 to coexist for more than a year or two. No one is buying a 316i and thinking "Ok, I know this is just a 136hp 4 cylinder, but that's as low as I go. No way I am even considering an I3, even if has essentially the same displacement as the I4." I mean that is nonsense.

And I do realize the N13 is being used in racing applications. So is the N18 for that matter. But is Mini going to use the N37 even for JCW models? If not, then they will move to the N20 next generation will they not? They could then use that engine for racing, and BMW could as well for that matter.

Speaking of which, I have yet to see an F20/F21 modified for racing/rally or any other form of motorsport. It has been quite some time on the market now.

JCW will remain a 4 cylinder for a while. The 3 cylinder will replace the lower output 4s across the line but it will be a roll out of the next few years in typical BMW fashion. The N20 is the wildcard in all this as right now it is underpowered compared to what it can churn out.

The US is only going to see the I3 in MINI and hybrid applications from what I've heard so it is really no biggie for the states. It will weigh less, have more performance and get better MPGs. I haven't had any seat time but I have heard lots of rave reviews for the past 2 years on this new engine so things are looking up...

They can just counter weight the flywheel like FORD has done and the problem is solved. The vibration is not bad at all in the lower output versions. It's the high boost, high compression versions they need to worry about.
