I find it strange that MB and Audi have gone to lengths to develop a "compact" for a US market - CLA and A3 sedan derived from their European only 5 door counterparts (A-class / A3 hatch) yet BMW sticks us with a 2 series coupe/vert but no sedan equivalent. Not that I'm complaining at all, but considering how portfolio matched all the other class of vehicles are, it's just an interesting point to note.

Keep complaining. I know I do.

How the hell do you (BMW AG ) get one upped in a segment (luxury compact coupe AND sedan - began with e21 and E30 models ) you created and then end up with your pants around your ankles and no sedan product ?

2017 BMW M3  [8.50]
2013 BMW M3  [10.00]
This has to be the one.

Nice enough looking but hard to imagine FWD.

I hope BMW makes money in China instead of just giving away all of their manufacturing technology.

I ask myself that everyday. I'm completely baffled how BMW totally missed this segment when they hit on niche segments like the X6. If there was one thing you could count on with BMW is that they would provide the best compact/entry car. They completely missed this in the worse way possible.

I really like that. Rwd,6-speed, 35i. What a killer combo with that small chassis

I think the fact that your M car is made in vast quantities will affect it more than this car will.

Looks like a baby 5 series to me, which I don't think is a bad thing.

Remains to be seen if BMW can combine FWD with the Ultimate Driving Machine ident... Not what any of us want but a lot of manufacturers have made successful FWD hot cars recently so maybe there is hope.

Either this or they concede the CLA / A3 market to the other manufacturers. I welcome the car because I want to see BMW continue making profits.

Too snouty

The proportions are not correct. The car appears nose heavy. Another missed opportunity.

It's a compact FWD car, of course it's nose heavy but not worse than A3 sedan or CLA.

At least that's my take.
So basically it's a BMW Audi A3...

Its exclusively for China (for the moment)
This Concept for a profitable and growth segment will further help to expand BMWs product substance and competitive advantage as it is the first premium product built exclusively and not a variant for the Chinese market.
Especially aimed at a younger demographic who have to settle for a pre-owned BMW.
But I can see this car being offered in other markets.

Read: we cannot produce enough cars for the Chinese market and the rest of the world, so we start there since we have a partner there to help build the car, and will launch it in a few months everywhere else ....

i dont know why everyone is complaining. we all knew this was coming years ago. if it comes to the US it will probably be xdrive only. Id have no issue with this car if its xdrive msport with a turbo 4. Will be a nice replacement to my old e46. assuming they keep the m performance line i see it coming as a M130i xdrive

China will get alternative iPerformance drivetrain from 225e Active Tourer and also M Performance with xDrive model.
A look inside showcases a typical BMW driver orientated interior.
