Oil consumption
Just had a oil low notification on my 118!
Thing is I check my oil all the time, at least every 4 weeks at a max time gap. However, this time she took 1 litre of oil. Also just started to notice a puff of blue smoke when I give it the beans. Anyone else had this problem? My car goes in for new rear pads on the 7th August and I have asked the dealership to check this out. A little concerned if I am honest. |

Not me, fortunately. Mine eats approx. 1/4-1/3 litre a year (according to the computer: I can't tell the stick level, no matter how hard I try to follow the procedure as described in the manual ). It drops at once and then persists a few more months (that's the measurement/display accuracy, I believe) until the oil change. Right you are, but hopefully it's all right. |

My wife's e70 with the n63 drank progressively more oil over 50000 k until we were adding 1 litre every 1500 k. For years BMW said it was within spec but the engine was clearly on its way out.
Keep a careful eye on it and don't let BMW fob you off about it. My M5 drinks about a litre every 5000k and has since new, but it is doing that at a fairly stable rate. |

If it really started to smoke than it's serious. Burning oil literally is quite a sign of failure (more than just the oil thirst). The car can be unable to pass the MOT incidentally.

My M135i (which of course doesn't have a dipstick) decided to suddenly need oil (I run the measurement tool every couple weeks out of habbit from when I had cars with dipsticks). Well the next day it didn't. Then the next it did. And so on for a few days. Then it always needed the top up so I gave it the litre it was asking for.
Problem for me was my 116D used to do this and I was able to verify the oil level on account of it actually having a dipstick. Whenever the sensor said "fill me up" I could check and see it didn't need filling up. Dunno what to trust but y'know... if BMW are happy to let the computer decide I should do something with the car then they can deal with any issues that causes...

Nope, it does not look so: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/acc...catalogue.html (Vehicle Identification | Engine | OIL PAN/OIL LEVEL INDICATOR, compare 116i LCI and 120i LCI).
(Rev. matching and dipstick don't come together. ) |

I see "no one" commenting to insight response but he does have a point, you may have invalidated your warranty. This is why I will never modify my brand new car car. And, I wouldn't purchase a 2nd hand car that had been messed about with unless they were forum members or friends I knew well. I've only been a member of this site since picking up my car and I've seen some shocking posts regarding modification and such. If I want a faster car I'll get one, M3 or M4. If I want a modded car / messed around with car then I'll get one that's a few years old and pile money into modifying it.
I sincerely hope this puff of smoke is just paranoia, expecting the worst. TBH if you have a standard exhaust system with catalytic converter then it's unlikely you'll see smoke anyway. We once had a car in to our garage for full exhaust system and de-cat, only to start it up and the car blew smoke constantly as the turbo seals were completely gone. The owner wasn't aware of his turbo issues before that, we re-fitted the cat for him and he drove away without any smoke at all. |
