N20 engines BMW recall

Hi

Does anyone know if the 125i F20 will be concerned by this massive recall ? It is very strange that the F20 isn't mentioned at all.

Best regards

Sorry, here is the link:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/news/72459...gerous-brakes/

In september it was supposed to concern only US cars. Now, it seems that it is a worldwide recall !

Yep the recall is worldwide. The reason the F20 is not concerned is because they use none of the affected engines..

^ I didn't realise the 125i was N20, sorry.

I guess it's not all N20 then, because the 20i engines in the 5, X1 and Z4 models aren't mentioned but the 3 is..

It is the same N20 engine. I guess F20 is not on the list because they don't have N20 in north America.

Not necessarily. They say not all N20s are affected. There are several subsuppliers of the affected camshaft parts.

How do we know the recall is worldwide? Should I be concerned about my UK 2012 June build F30 328i?

Potentially, all the cars equipped with the N20B20 engine are concerned. This means everything named X20i to X30i and assembled between 2012 and now.

Makes a change that it's not something to do with the diesels.

The articles that I have read say that it is a worldwide recall. There are 176000 affected -

"Approx. 76191 of the vehicles are in the United States, about 25000 in China, 9376 in Canada, 6841 in Germany, 2738 in Mexico and the rest in other countries."

5533 are affected in South Africa, which leave about 50000 affected in the rest of the world. Since your car has be built in the concerned time period, you have a high chance of being affected. Best thing to do is to contact your local BMW and ask. Good luck

From the above link:
Some interesting information was posted in the N20 section of the *********** BMW forums regarding the durability of the N20 motor. Now, the motor is becoming very popular and is winning multiple awards and rightfully so as it is currently the best factory 2.0 liter turbo four cylinder in production. The keyword there being factory as apparently it is not going to be a stout aftermarket tuning platform at least not yet. Take the information you are about to read as unconfirmed but from an interesting source.

There are companies that stress test engines for OEM's. One of these companies has been testing the N20 apparently. The advice given is not to go beyond Stage 2 on the N20 which means a slightly more aggressive tune on the factory turbocharger. Why? The N20 head apparently cracks at around 331 pound-feet of torque. That is not exactly a whole lot of torque in the turbo tuning game especially considering the motor puts out an underrated 258 pound-feet from the factory.

Apparently the engine is just running very hot and multiple heat cycles are creating problems. BMW behind the scenes is supposedly trying to correct the issue. For whatever reason BMW seems to have a reputation for problems with new motors. S54 bearings, S65 bearings, and the next BMW new motor issue looks to be the N20 head cracking.

The story is that one of the lead designers and engineers for the N20 was flown out to the USA to inspect the findings for himself. It is doubtful BMW would do that unless there was something of substance to this. This same company also apparently tested other BMW motors including turbo motors such as the N54 and N55 when they were new and they did not run into these head issues.

So what is going to happen? Well, right now it is not recommended for N20 owners to push their motors too far which they can't anyway as there are not aftermarket turbo options out just yet. BMW will likely resolve the problem with a new head which will mean for those with the N20 there will either be a recall or there will be a BMW part number option to get the new head. We will have to wait and see what happens but N20 owners should be aware of the potential issue especially if intending to tune as BMW is unlikely to say anything until they have to.

Very interesting pdf document. Here in France, we will never have such a precise document. My 125i has been assembled on march 31th 2012. The VIN is E6100XX. Can I conclude that it will not be affected ?

But they were very precise when they froze the Mercedes sales due to use of "wrong" coolant...

I completely agree with you. This was really a shame for France. In addition, the air quality is so bad here in France because of these old diesel french cars. I have been in Malmö last summer (baltic bike tour). What a difference ! Even in Germany, one can feel a huge difference of the air quality.

The French government just don't know how to deal with the diesel specific problem (in addition to many others).

In my case, I am very very satisfied with my F20 125i. Very reliable, confortable and so powerfull. The mileage is now 24.000 kms. Never had any problem or issue.

Hi All,
I just received a letter from BMW asking me to go to "control" the intake camshaft at the nearest BMW garage.

Anybody heard something more about that?

For what it's worth, my nov 2013 125i is due next monday for this recall, and 2 other non-critical ones.
