Rattling From Nearside Rear (UK)

A rattle mainly at low speeds over bumpy roads has been driving me nuts, it's not consistant enough to convince me it's suspension top mounts. Given the car has only covered 11,000 miles I'd be fuming if it was to be honest. The sound was almost like the rear valance being loose but it isn't.

I had a good ferret about in the cubby that holds the warning triangle, medkit, towing eye, locking wheel bolt key and the single screwdriver (What a toolkit we get these days)

I have also pulled out the entire foam moulding and felt around to make sure nothing was rolling around in the space, it's empty.

I did notice the wheel bolt key sits inside the towing eye loop and is a sloppy fit so could have been the source of the rattle so for now the key is in the glovebox. Everything else has been refitted and I will test further next week to see if the rattle has gone.

Hope it is as if not it's going in for an inspection as I can only think suspension or maybe part of the exhaust knocking on the tunnel.

I can 100% say its the mounts. By any chance is the rattle only audible inside the car? And is it worst over "rough" surfaces rather than big bumps? And also when the car is "recovering" after a bump I.e dampers are damping the ups and downs?

Symptoms and mileage exactly as mine was. I tried everything... Seat locks, hatch interior card, hatch lock etc.

There's a UK puma for it so no arguments needed unlike the chain.

Since the revised shockers are fitted its like a new car in terms of quiet.

Cheers mate, I'll find some time to get it looked at once I can be sure of repeating the noise with a tech. At least it won't be a drama getting it sorted this time although another box of choccies and bottle of bubbly from BMW would be handy for Xmas.

These rattles have also been found to be caused by the tailgate knocking against the catch loop, a seal replacement can cure it as can wrapping some tape around the catch loop in the rear panel.

Not had mine back for checking yet but will do when I go in to have my Summers refitted.

You think BMW would have sorted this. My Missus Cooper S did this. It was well documented on the Mini forums as the "D Ring" rattle.

My F20 does this and only has done 3500 miles. Thing I've heard it since the 1700 mile mark. Will taking it to BMW help?

It's annoying, it's repeatable and it shouldn't be happening so yes and I'm going to do it too.

I have a same sound on my F20. I think it is coming somewhere from the trunk / boot door, inside. I have noticed that it is louder when outside temperature is low and car is "cold". If somenone have resolved this problem, please help .

You can try wrapping electrical insulation tape around the D ring in the lower boot that the catch locks onto. Don't use too much as boot wont close just 1 or 2 layers should make a difference.

That is the "Bodge" fix but imo BMW should do a proper fix, either by parts replacement or adjustment to stop the rattle.
