Bumpy ride..

Hi,

After some ideas here on a really bumpy ride i'm currently experiencing at motorway speeds..

few weeks back hit a pothole which needed two new offside tyres due to bulges.. got that sorted out ASAP and the at motorway speeds the ride felt very 'lumpy and bumpy' strange i thought, so took it in for a KDS, all the boxes came back green following adjustment... still feeling lumpy and bumpy though!

two nearside tyres have ~13k on them, could this account for the change in ride versus the brand new ones? all are Bridgestone s001 runflats..

The car has been looked at by BMW, and i'm sure they would have told me if any suspension was damaged... but i'm struggling to think what to check with costing me mega bucks..

could it be a bad batch of tyres?
could the pressures be wrong (will check tomorrow) or nuts are not as tight as they could be...

i am leaning towards the new tyres just not really being 'bedded in' yet... they've only done a few hundred miles so far, but it's driving me round the bed as the drive was so nice and smooth before and now it's just shit and really pissing me off

claim has gone in to the council for new tyres... won't hold my breath but it might cheer me up... ty!!

Good luck with the claim ripped the side-wall of my front-left hitting a pothole after 4k and didn't get anywhere with my claim. They filled the pothole quick enough though!

I'd be suspecting a buckled wheel or two if the tyres were that badly damaged and could give any sort of odd behaviour. Not sure if having new tyres on one side would cause a problem like this but there could be 5 or 6 mm difference in ride height between sides.

Definitely start with tyre pressures, you have to have your normal pressures as a baseline to make any judgement.

Buckled wheels and the like would normally cause a vibration at a higher frequency at motorway speeds, than a 'bumpy' ride.

Tyres can also be broken. I have seen that happen, and it causes a different vibration than unbalanced wheels. It is typically worst at lower speeds, maybe around 30 km/h.

Yeah it's a vibration.. Good description...

I asked the tyre fitter to check for damaged wheels, and they said they looked fine by eye...

Car is going into BM for warranty work in 2 weeks I'll ask them to check for wheel defects, and rebalance them. How much are run out tests normally..? Hours labour or so?

*sigh*

Get itemised reciepts to be added to the claim from the council in the event they do actually decide to pay up.

Both rims and tyres need checking. As ovekvam has said, tyre damage can be the cause.

I take no pleasure in suspecting the cause though, see what your local dealer or indy can do for you. Secondhand will just be a gamble as you have no idea how the wheels have been treated.

sigh, I do not know why they charge so much for the rims..... I know this probably won't help but I am just putting it out there....

I did this job once, I used a lathe to check how badly it whobbles, then you worry about if they are concentric and if they pass balance. As long as it passes balance on that tyre machine then it's ok. Of the four coming from an old E34 525i my buddy and I saved two.

You can only take off a little metal, though~

I don't think it helps much, but with rims that may be no good, you may just get lucky

it looks like i'm going to have to suck it up and pay for new ones... i'm so furious with the council for leaving the road in such a shocking condition... it's going to end up costing me ~£1250 to sort all in!

*weep*
