Which M series are collectors?

OK.. gonna give this a try. This is what I think will be collectors or are collectors in order.

1. M1 (not the 1M)
2. 1st M3
3. 1st M6
4. 1st M5
5. M2 to be - first of its kind?
6. E92 V8 - just because it's the only V8 in the M3 editions?
7. 1M - rarity but not much demand on this one.. am i wrong?
8. E46 - Just a feeling... but its value isn't high right now.. been hovering around 18-25k. blah.
9. everything else.
....

Am I missing anything? What do you guys think?

I would move the 1M up a bit since it was such a limited run.

I think an M can be considered collectable but few with the exception of the M1 are investment grade classics.

Clean e46 M3's with 6-spd, relatively low miles, good upkeep, and a desirable combo are mostly in the $30k+ range.

Last naturally aspirated M3 with I6.

Isn't every M3 the first, last, or only of its engine configuration?

E30 only I4
E36 first N/A I6
E46 last N/A I6
E92 only V8
F80 first/only turbo I6

z8 is really the only collector's car in my mind. All the others might hold their value better, but z8 is the only one that has gone up in value if I recall correctly.

How could i freaking forget the Z8... I knew it was a bargain at $110K 10 years ago with 20K miles on it, but you know money doesn't grow on trees for me lol it's probably worth double that now. It's definitely my favorite of all BMWs.

Definitely the Z8. A buddy of mine with an E46 M3 just bought one for collector purposes. Seems the values keep going up, especially of recent.

I'd like the see the M Coupes become more sought after, but that's just a hope. The 1M will probably be valuable before the M Coupes catch on.

Other than that, I feel like most M cars are produced in too high of numbers to really be considered collectors.

E30 M3
E36 M3 lightweight
E46 M3 CSL
F82 M4 GTS
E82 1M (due to limitied numbers)

Base models not likely. Exceptions maybe for something with really low miles and the correct options (example: E46 M3, slicktop, manual, comp pack, individual color, 100% original).

Oh how come no one pointed out the M3/M4 GTS? I think they will be collectors if done right. The Last orange M3 GTS was not that great. If the M4 GTS is done right, they will be i think.

M1 obviously. E30 M3 seems to be now. Z8 of course is but that isn't an M. E46 M3 CSL. Z3 M coupe is (especially the S54 version). The 1M will only get more valuable I bet. The original M5, the handbuilt one(E28?). The M 635 Csi probably also.

It is this lack of consistency model to model that robs M3's of soul and character and limits values, unlike 911s. Still great cars though in their own right.

Great point... not only the engine has the lack of consistency but the body style keeps changing voiding it from being a classic like the 911.

+

Ferrari has constantly changing body styles and are consistently among the most valuable classic cars although they are produced in much smaller numbers than BMW M cars.

I think it is very hard to predict what will be coveted 30, 40 or 50 years from now just as 45 years ago nobody was predicting that a 1971 Plymouth could be a million dollar car.

In any case I don't know of any recent (last 40 years) BMW model that could have been bought new, properly maintained and sold for a profit. The Z8 may be the only exception.
