New wheels on - time for some photos!

Took my girl out for a feed and a wash today, before taking some saucy photos of her and, yes, making her scream a little.

Red's not a colour I'd normally choose for a car, either inside or out, but my GF was keen on it (and is paying for the leather ), and I'm actually pretty impressed with how it looks. Great seats too.

I do like the 379 rims, but now I'm wishing I had the M-perf brakes, as the stock calipers look pretty shoddy in comparison.

Price for that spec was pretty close to 40K€.

I had her up to pretty much her top speed on the autobahn today - 229kmh, according to the cruise control, and my GPS also read 229kmh. Which is a big change to my last 1-series - at its top speed the speedo read at least 10kmh higher than what my GPS told me.

At that speed, you can see the bonnet wobbling around like it's made of paper.

OMG!

Thats similar to the look I want from my BMW.
I've ordered a 116i 1.6 turbo (petrol) Valencia Orange (b44).

This is the exact alloys (M6 kind) I have ordered but in 18" size (245/35/18R).

Also I'm waiting for the car to arrive, I will install a chip (136 -> 170HP).

I've already made a photoshop illustration to see the wheels on:

You should make a video recording for us to hear!

OK, will do, just as soon as I can work out how to mount a camera looking over my shoulder.

The steering was much more twitchy at that speed than I was expecting. I'm not sure if it's just because it's faster than my old car went, or perhaps because I had it in sport mode?

Tried to shoot a video today, but it's just too bright out to be able to see both the road and the interior in the picture - the contrast is too high. (How do Top Gear do it?!)

Looks like I'll have to wait for an overcast day and try again.

I went up to 220km/h for a very short moment, didn't see any wobbling going on with the hood. When I get the opportunity I'll max it out completely, gonna pay attention to the hood then.

I haven't managed to reproduce the "paper hood" effect again. Maybe it was a windy day, or a bumpy bit of autobahn, or something?

Still, I'll try to get the camera in the car again soon and shoot some video of autobahn speeds.

So here's a bit of video, showing the car reaching its top speed on the autobahn. The car still has plenty of power at around 180-190 kmh, but after that it's working pretty hard to get up to 230.

It's not a very practical speed to be driving at - the steering is getting twitchy, the noise is tremendous, and it's using a ton of fuel. And it's also hard/unsafe to do in any sort of traffic - there's a reason this video is on a nice quiet bit of autobahn. There's nothing like having someone pull out just in front of you when you're going that fast.

I tried other camera positions, wanting also to get the most engine sound and the least wind noise, but it wasn't easy. You can still hear that lovely gurgling rumble at the lower speeds, though.

Approximate, unscientifically measured times: 0-100km/h: 8 seconds. 100-200km/h: 25 seconds. 200-229km/h: 38 seconds. Although the car is hardly accelerating when it gets up towards 229, you can still definitely feel it hitting the electronic limiter.

Now, I'm probably going to be driving only in ECO-PRO mode for the next month, until I get my average fuel consumption back down to what it was before I made all these attempts at recording this.

Fantastic video- thanks for sharing. What mode do you have your centre screen sent to?

Matt, Thank you for doing all this!
I am waiting for my own 120d, and this made me even more keen on driving it

The Autobahn stretch you drove was a little curvy. Deformation of the tires in a curve adds to the driving resistance. Driving flat out on an absolutely straight road would probably give you another 3-4 km/h

great post matt!! nice vid

I didn't know there is a electronic limit at 230km/h ?! Not that it would go alot faster indeed but still... always a nice feeling maxing out a car completely and know that it's truly maxed out not beeing able to give one bit more =)

iBeech, the centre screen is showing fuel consumption - it's one of the Efficient Dynamics displays.

I hadn't thought about the curve affecting the speed - good point. But although it might help the acceleration times, the top speed is still going to be limited by the electronics. You can fool it for very short periods - if you're at the top speed and come over a small rise, the extra bit of power will get you up over the limited speed. But then you'll feel the engine throttle back and it'll slow back down.

It seems a bit unnecessary to me - like you say, wolz, it's not going to go much faster anyway. And the last M-B I drove wasn't limited, and was able to go faster than my old 1-series, despite having less power.

Anyway, the video was a bit of fun to make, and I figure it's interesting for those of you, living in countries where you can't do this on the roads.
