OBD2 data from N13 engine now working

When I bought the 116i back in 2012, it was not possible to read RPM data from the OBD2 port. There were complaints about this on forums in several countries. Several adapters and mobile phone apps were tested, but it didn't work on the 116i or 118i.

Today I tried again, with the same app and adapter, and now it works! It must have been fixed in a software update when the car was in for service. That means I can now have fake V8 sound in my car when I'm driving.

Would that be a turbo V8 or an NA V8

Definitely a turbo V8, judging by the fake popoff sound when I go off the throttle at high RPM. There is also noticeable lag in the sound.

I miss the sound of NA engines

The M5 V10 was a joy to listen to!

Probably the best sounding BMW engine must be the V12's they used in the McLaren F1 and the BMW Le Mans prototypes !

The M5 V10 does not sound good at all at cold idle, but it sounds good under load. My favourite is probably the S14 engine from the E30 M3. In highly strung racing applications with a carbon fibre air intake, it has a very special sound.

I'm just too old, but 4cyl engines sound best when they're topped by twin Weber DCOE 45 carburetors 😯
