Convince me out of this
Let me start with some background:
I'm 26, single (well have a gf) make a very good living, own a two family investment house with my sister, and lease an F80 M3, own an E83 X3 M Sport (for the winter). I just put about $2,500 into the X3 with maint, Oil Pan Gasket, Oil Filter Housing Gasket, etc etc etc.... Anyway, after driving my M3 all summer, i got into the X3 as a daily again and i feel numb. Its a great car, but its eh. So i saw an X5M on the road, and started thinking. I just drove a 2010 with 53k miles on it last night. I'm in love. but the $31k pricetag, plus the fact that its really only for winter and rainy summer days is making my financial side kick my butt. And it would also be out of warranty. I know i should drive the X3 now that i've put maint money into it. I bought the car last year for 11k from a BMW CCA member, and although all the maint at that time was done, i'm still doing more. The car sits at 106k miles right now. It's not even the $$, its the principal that i will get shit on for resale or trade in after spending that money. I cant get the X5M out of my head, but i know its probably a dumb idea. Someone kick me.

You already have a 'M' car. If you are just looking for a winter "beater", then stick with what you have. I don't see much of a difference in spending all that money on a M SUV which IMHO doesn't get you much if it's a 2nd car AND it's only being used for the winter.

Still considered single in my book. No ring on your fingers, hunting season is still on.
Back on topic, if you can swing it, do it. YOLO. |

In most cases this gentleman has absolutely no rights and could make his life a living hell by manipulating the legal system and perverted laws/statutes on the books But back on topic.......let me get this straight......you're on a BMW enthusiast site asking folks to talk you out of buying another BMW? If you WANT the car and can AFFORD the car and have money in the bank for future then get the car |

How would you feel when some loser slides into your shiny new-to-you X5M during a January snow storm?
Same question, but the X3 instead? Winter beater- expect it to get beat, otherwise you'd be driving the M3...

Just sayin'- the nicer your winter beater the more likely it is that somebody will hit it regardless of how careful you may be.

What are your goals in life?
If I was in that position, I would probably end up dumping the X3 for something that is cheaper to maintain and repair. This would free up more money that I would put towards gaining more financial prosperity. The continued savings/investing will pay off as it will open up a couple new doors when your M3 lease is up. The x3 itself is pretty inexpensive @ 11k, but you have already spent 20% of the car's value in a repair. At which point do you feel all in? However, my bias comes from one that sacrifices in hopes to achieve more in the future. |

This is great insight. Although grouped into the 26 year old millennial category, these types of things are not typical to me. I've always been a saver and have a nice nest egg + investments. I have thought a lot about trying to save more, or perhaps invest in another home. As far as selling the X3, again, another good option. But, at this point, mostly all of the maintenance has been done, everything has been replaced in the past 20k miles. Although i realize these cars are unpredictable, this car is in a very good place as far as maintenance.

An M-model for a sport ute is silly (IMHO), but really far out as a winter weather machine. It seems so mismatched between car capabilities and intended use, that it would be like a giant rolling compromise.
Why not spend a little to upgrade the x3 for winter rally-style fun, and enjoy it that way. I second the above comments about not caring as much if it gets hit, and I can't imagine you would really be able to appreciate the M-bonus in the snow, so kind of a waste of money. And if maintenance on the x3 seems expensive, you'd surely be kicking yourself when you start spending for M-goodies and their upkeep. |
