Imminent accident avoided?

There was jam in front, actually came to full stop as u can see in the video. The white GLK came in hot. I saw him/her in the mirror, didn't seem like it can stop in time/distance. What do u think? Will I be fine if I didn't pull this stunt? Yeah, I didn't really know how far the car in the lane I cut in was. Actually in the video, she is very close. But , a judgement call is a judgment call, right?

Looked like a non event either way. By the time you switched lanes they were already slowing down

Video can be quite deceiving in term of speed because of wide angle camera lens.

Because before you change lanes it looks as though the Mercedes can stop in time, but as you pull some distance after the lane change, the Mercedes looks as though it's still diving as it comes to a stop in the space you would have occupied.

Mercedes can't react that quickly

IMO - you were going too fast for the traffic/road conditions (stop and go) and in the process of correcting for the speed vs the stopped traffic ahead of you, you cut-off the van to your right. It just so happens there was a Merc driving like you (too fast) who was behind you.

I suggest putting up the two or three minutes of front and rear video prior to the 12 sec rear video originally posted to give the full story's true perspective.

See the front view.
The traffic was not bad until the white Lexus in front of me changed lane and revealed the white VW that came to a complete stop. I slowed down just fine. But GLK didn't.

I think you would have been fine if stayed in your lane. Your "avoidance" move almost caused a collision with the white van. Maybe your speed was excessive?

Well, if you had rear-ended the VW in front, you could have been ticketed for following too close. Those split second decisions are tough. All ended OK so be thankful.

You're lucky the other car was able to brake and move in time otherwise u would've been at fault.

You can see that I did manage to stop about one car length behind VW, right? The speedo one dashcam is not real-time. But you can see I would never rear-end VW if Merc was not there. If I didn't pull this "stunt", Merc would rear-end me by 80% chance at least.

Yeah, should have cut into the carpool lane. That lane was rather open...

Heads up driving on your part. In the front view video there were lots of cars that stopped short which seems to be the real reason for the necessity of the maneuver.

I'd recommend looking farther up the road. The short stopping was a bit ridiculous.

Merc was coming in fast, but hit the brake pretty hard before you changed lanes, looks like he let go of the brake when you changed lanes. Don't think the Merc would have hit you.

I saw Mercedes closing in fast when I was coming to a stop behind VW. thought about changing lane then but saw cars at my 5 and 7 o'clock so I didn't cut in, hope Mercedes driver would have slowed down in time. Didn't look like the case. So what the fxkk, got the hell out of dodge. Could end up pretty bad hitting the car in my blind spot but luck is with me this time....

I think the Merc came in hot but most likely would've stopped fine. Like others said, luckily you didn't cause an accident w/ that other vehicle.

I wish I had a rear cam, I avoided something like that but I left a gap in front of me that I quickly sped up to occupy because some idiot was coming in hot also, for sure that guy didn't stop in time as he occupied the space I just vacated after slamming his brake the last moment. Crazy drivers out there.
