OK, to appease Lups I'll tell you jaye944 that I've found the best thing to have at bedtime if you anticipate a hypo is: MILK. Has the lactose, some fat, and some protein to cover you for hours of sleep. At least until the milk works on your bladder, but that's an added benefit in that you will have to wake up and pee, so you won't sleep thru the hypo.

The liver does kick out sugar, but it's really a bit slow-acting. And yes, the high after the low ;( And without the natural feedback if you are taking insulin, once it's injected you have to cover that carb debt.

When I complain to my wife about the rhythm of meals, and why I NEED to keep those times, and then her eye kind of roll up and she doesn't seem to care. At these times I REALLY want to go dial up a big bolus of insulin, inject her to force a hypo, and THEN we will have that discussion.

And let's not forget, if you crash your car because of hypo (at least in Cali) it is a DWI. A lot of diabetics end up nearly dying in the drunk tank.

Non fat milk! You're a freak i tell you!

It's solstice here, the whole country is closed for us to have the proper time to get wildly drunk at our remote summer homes but since my mil is cooking, i lost the car keys and the kids are sick and the poor sob I married has been informed I will end his sorry existence if he even tries to haul our family there.

I think i have anger issues.

Does that come from skinny cows or something?

So, it's OK for you to change the perfect drink by processing it and removing all the fat. But I can't improve perfection by swirling in a little chocolate?

I don't think your issues are only with anger. . .

yup agreed, milk, or yogurt. or a big mac LOLZ
Some people get very bad dawn phenomenon i used to,
go to bed with a 4 or 5 wake up on an 11 !

and yes, a lot of DM's get arrested for drunk/disor and are actually having a hypo, I think nowadays cops are more aware due to the higher incidences of people have DM

don't know if this is a DM thing,
but I noticed (moreso now that I'm DM)
when I eat Chocolate or say Ice cream, My heartrate ups and I feel so groovy
adrenaline rush... I mean I just have to have it in front of me and sniff the damn thing,
can't be a BG response
just like the 1st time you kiss a girl...
sure it's just me,
but it's gotta be something really chocolaty either rich candy, muffin, cake etc

This thread gave my friends a reason to smile and they have had a great weekend. Even a forum like this can bring in great results for people everywhere and the positive attitude shown here is a great example.

You sick, sick (and non diabetic way sick!) fucker!

It's long weekend here as told and mine has sucked balls for sure but this morning my friend called me and said again you made their weekend.

The small gestures we all do to make life better for others are the best things to show our worth. I donated a goat today in your name for this thread.

(again, i sat down to a table with food cooked by my mother-in-law. Please people, someone ask how bad it was so i can deal with the traumas!)

Many of my patients use the sealed packets of cake frosting as emergency glucose - much more palatable for the kids, but every so often they get eaten in non emergencies so you have to keep an eye on the supplies.

And for those fearing amputations as an inevitable outcome, that is not the case. if you keep overall sugar levels w/i range, you avid most of the damage that will cost you legs, eyes, etc. (HgA1c levels track this best). Some can't avid this even with the most diligent self-care, but most can. Most amputations come from a poorly healing wound that you let get too big b/c you did not feel it (that diabetic neuropathy numbs out the feet), so if you don't have good sensation, start a routine of checking them visually, and being real real careful with blisters and small scrapes/cuts. On the plus side, prosthetics are now so good that many do better after the amputation in terms of mobility/functioning (vs. a junk foot that is in constant pain and constantly risking full sepsis).

There are really 2 ways to look at DM (as any other chronic illness)

You are either

1> A Diabetic
2> A person who has Diabetes

I choose to not let the DM manage my life,
I have limitations in my life for sure, but don't we all.

My rules

1> I'm going to die someday, just not to day
2> Yes I can eat candy, chocolate and prohibitive food (just not a whole gallon in one setting)
3> Thou shalt not increase your insulin dose to counter eating a dessert
4> A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips, wait 2 hours and check BG
5> INFORMATION IS POWER
6> Double check everything, including your doctor

After I realized DM wasn't a death sentence, I just ramped up my insulin when I wanted to cheat

Statements that make me wanna punch people in the face

1> If you keep eating Candy you'll become a diabetic like your dad
2> So, you take insulin, but your type 2
3> So like I'm a little bit diabetic
4> Aren't you a bit old to be taking insulin
5> "Mah the doctor said I has this sugar diabetes"
6> Pay attention when I talk to you
7> Oh you poor thing, I'll pray for you <- (no seriously)
8> So a lot of diabetics are skinny
9> Why are diabetics so fat
10> Can you drink Diet Coke ?

feel free to add

NooB. OK, maybe not a GALLON. But certainly a whole carton of ice cream. My cousin once ate a pound of See's just to see if his pump could handle it. OK, that was his EXCUSE for eating a pound.

3> Thou shalt not increase your insulin dose to counter eating a dessert
Why not? That is EXACTLY what your functional pancreas would do. Unless you are just hoping to not utilize all those extra calories and instead pee out all the sugar. AT some point you have to bring your BG back to normal, and those calories will be added to your hips.

6> Double check everything, including your doctor
THIS!! I had a Dr, who was one of the area's recognized experts. Except he wasn't a trained endocrinologist, he just happened to be a type 1 himself. He and I clashed on EVERYTHING in my treatment. IF my A1c is right in the area you want, why would you cut my insulin just because their is some ideal weight/insulin ratio? Don't compare your exercise/food control with mine, and then adjust MY dose based on YOUR lifestyle.

I can totally relate, myt son has only one ear, he is seven, speaks two languages, he is pretty awesome in everyway and naturally I'm completely objective here, and people keep shouting at him so he can hear better. When he covers his only ear because of the loud noise, they claim he can't even understand.

People are the brightest thing in the human race.

Here we see why I no longer use type 1/2. I am insulin dependent. Jaye seems to only need to supplement his other oral regimin, but he could probably survive in the post-apocalyptic world, at least for a while. Me, without insulin injection, I have about 2 weeks to get the family set up and sufficient after the big one is dropped. And I will be a miserable crank those final 2 weeks, a major drain on the water supply, and would probably eat a bullet long before the 2 weeks were up.

My mother in-law, the magic chef I keep mentioning has type two. It's like watching someone trying to maximize stupidity daily.

She makes bad, Horrible foods. Then she tries it, and eats white bread until she is full. She hates exercise and she thinks sugar is the thing to look out for, as in sugar coming from a bag, not any other form of it. She has been on oral meds for about 15 years and now she refuses to move to injections since those make you fat and they destroy your life...

She also tells my husband he will also get type two since we don't eat enough bread, we eat mostly meat and greens and our kids get a bad example from us since we make them eat fatty, non processed foods.

Kids of course need more calories and more carbs to grow, but we two are pushing 40, we need to keep muscle mass up and blood sugars steady.
