New Volvo XC90
What are your thoughts about the new XC90 that will be revealed August 26th? We have seen some glimpse for a long time now and I'm starting to really looking forward to the full reveal. I think this car can become the new king of the hill, well at least in Sweden.

The big question is the engine. Will the top of the line be even remotely competitive with even the weakest of Porsche, BMW and Benz comparable US lineup? Unfortunately I think the Yamaha cooperation is over with? Looks promising though. I'd likely give it a go next time if the engine and chassi is on par with the 2013 Cayenne we have now.

I've had a strong hunch that this will be a game hanger ever since those interior shots leaked. Everything looks top notch.

I can't explain why, but styling-wise this car definitely feels Asian to me, not Swedish ... it's something in the steering wheel, overhead interior shots and definitely that headlight shot ... it feels Japanese or Korean.
Not that that's bad, it just feels incongruous to me since Volvo is a Swedish brand. It feels like the best looking Asian interior I've seen, not the best European interior. This is versus, say, Audi which, to my eye, is definitely German / Braun design from the 60s and 70s:

not fond of everything being controlled via the touchscreen. neat idea but also a nuisance (based on my experience with a rental ford edge). otherwise looks like a very promising vehicle and would imagine upcoming x5 buyers will consider it.

Volvo has released powertrain figures on the redesigned XC90 mid-sized crossover due to be unveiled in Sweden in August and expected to go on sale in the United States in the first quarter. The top-of-the-line T8 version will have a plug-in hybrid system making “around” 400 hp and 472 pounds-feet of torque. The power will come from a supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine combined with an 80-hp electric motor that powers the rear wheels. Volvo says the supercharger works to eliminate power lag on the low end, while turbochargers kick in when air flow has built up. The XC90 also can run exclusively on electric power for as much as 25 miles. The XC90 range also will include a T6 gasoline-only engine that will use the same turbocharging/supercharging technology to deliver 316 hp and 295 pounds-feet of torque. Volvo has dubbed its new technology Drive-E and says it will be available across its product line within the next few years. |

Seeing how well the Tesla is selling, it shouldn't be an issue. I see these things all over the place anyway. The "Git'er dunnn" crowd isn't the target demo for the Volvo XC.

Ultimately it comes down to how well it all works. Unfortunately, you have to throw figures out for marketing but in reality, people like my wife who hauls the kid around in an X5 doesn't give a crap about stats, torque, hp, etc - or perhaps more accurately, she doesn't care about numbers. The SUV needs to be able to pull out into traffic quickly, merge easily, and cruise effortlessly on the highway. It just happens that all of these 5,000 lb beasts need about 300hp to do that.
I think what they've revealed so far is clean and handsome. We'll definitely check it out what it comes out. |

My money won't be on the Volvo. I happen to work in the auto business on the supply side so I see stats and will share when they seem interesting.
I'm not Volvo's target market, and I've lost faith in them since they became part of Geely even if I would have considered one. |

Just saw an article that the price range for this will be $65k - $135k range. Seems a little crazy on the high end. That's GL63 AMG and Cayenne Turbo S territory... For a Volvo.
Looks like someone already posted the article here: http://bmwi.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1024982 |

So a twin charged plug-in hybrid? Hmmm...yeah I will not be first in line to verify if the reliability of that highly complex power unit...and if/when it proven itself for a couple of years the new Cayenne will likely be out and blow everything off the streets... Still as a swede it's nice to see a proper investment in this new Volvo. 4 banger SUVs of this size is a hard sell in the US though. I'm ok with it if it's extremely reliable and pulls hard enough to feel athletic and effortless.

Nobody. My guess is that someone took the pricing from another currency and converted it, which you can't do when talking car prices. There is no way they are going to jack up the price of the car by 65%. It's simply unheardof.

" we are quite sure that the $135,000 price will be a fully-loaded, ultra-luxury XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid, equipped with a turbo+supercharged gas engine for front axle and another electric motor for the rear axle, with combined power of 400hp and 472 lb-ft torque."
Holy mother reliability engineer!!! Have fun making that powertrain last >100k miles. |

Yeah, even $65k is still high, though it didn't stand out to me with many cars going upmarket, inflation, higher prices, etc. I mean, there's a $60k Hyundai out there somewhere and people have paid for it. And I would personally rather have a Volvo over any Hyundai assuming those were the only two choices.
The conversion from another currency theory makes sense. Last edited by ddk632; 08-19-2014 at 12:41 PM.. Reason: Typo |

My father had a V70 D4 as a loaner for almost half a year. I drove it quite a bit and must say that it was an impressive vehicle. The diesel was fast and responsive and it was an excellent long-distance cruiser. Very comfortable seats, and the GPS was the best I've ever used. Mind you though, that's coming from a BMW owner who has some of the worst GPS systems.

I briefly looked at the V60 Polestar. They're popping out some nice product!

Agree, the V60 is looking really good. Volvo is no competition to BMW and Porsche but Porsche has no V60 competitor and the BMW touring lineup in the US isn't really large or very impressive. If I was shopping Audi I'd definitely take a look at a V60 for the same $.
