Buying 1 series - need opinions
I’m buying a 1 series and looking for some advice from people who may already own similar cars or know a bit more than I do.
I’ve narrowed down to 2 cars within my budget. 1. 118i M Sport Shadow Edition - Jun 2018 (18 plate) - 10,137 miles - No previous owners, was a showroom model. - 2.5 years left on the warranty 2. 120i M Sport Plus - Sept 2016 (66 plate) - 18,561 miles - 1 previous owner - 8 months left on the warranty Both are similar price. Both are approved used. Being shadow edition / m sport plus they are almost identical spec. The age of the 120 makes it the only 120i M sport in my price range. I’m leaning towards the 120 but put off by the age/time left under warranty. As they are fairly similar cars can anyone shed some more light on the main differences I can expect? Any pro’s/con’s between the two? I’m test driving both on Monday - is there anything I should look out for? |

A properly owned car should be WAY better than an orphan! The 118i appears to have high mileage for a "showroom model", doesn't it? And those were careless (hard?) miles. Yet, a bad owner could be even worse. It's a shame you won't meet him/her. It should really worth it looking at the owner. Check the service history, if possible (120i in particular): have there been any warranty issues? 120i must have been serviced already (2 years, right?). Look at the tires: how much worn they are, the rear in particular. The brakes could tell some truth too but you can't see their condition that easily. Mind the cabin, perhaps: whether it has been cleaned meticulously or looks "naturally" tidy. Check the equipment: anything retrofitted into 120i should be doubtful (unless OEM, preferably at the dealer's - paper proof). A used car with extended storage package but basic boot trim (retrofitted) has been questioned here once... I don't know about those "B" engines you consider but N13 has a gentle cooling system - leaks are very possible (if not warmed before pushing hard?). |

Age and condition aside, the main differences would be the engine and interior. The 118i lacks a cylinder but is an LCI2 meaning updated dash and instrument cluster.
