Weird Brakes

Before anyone gets freaked out, it's not that bad.

Sometimes when I'm driving at very low speeds (traffic, parking, going over a bump) when I take my foot off the break, it doesn't move (driving an auto here). What happens is the brake pedal becomes very stiff if I press it again and it takes a few seconds for the brakes to release and allow the car to move. If i press the gas pedal, it'll move immediately.

As far as I know, the 1 series doesn't have an auto-hill brake option.

Has anyone else experienced this or can anyone shed some light as to why this might happen?

Cheers
Hasan

Yes, these cars have a hill holder feature, and that is what you have experienced here. Very nice for starting uphill with manual gear.

What engages the feature? Because its happening to me on level roads.

Normally it happens when your car is not level. A small degree of inclination is enough to activate the hill-brake.

Its done by vacuum.

That's why the pedal feels "pumped" stiff

I found out about this feature just a couple of months before I had to return my car to the leasing company . Holding down the key button to open / close all your windows is another feature not everyone knows about.
