A well specified 116i is surprisingly competent unlike the old 1-series but you need to get the spec right! I would make sure the car had the servotronic power steering, front parking sensors, folding / reverse dipping wing mirrors. BMW Professional SatNav and sunroof are welcome options if the budget can stretch. Enjoy

You wouldn't think a smaller and lighter car would need one.
But the 1 series without power steering is somewhat unrefined (relative to the electrically-assisted servotronic power steering you're used to in the big boys. ) This servo is admittedly over assisted at low speeds but it feels so much more refined generally. This one is one of the most important options I ticked to make it an uncompromised transition.

The point I am making is: you dont need one but you may want one (if you try it) and how badly would you miss it
If you drive a 116i with Sports AT and servotronic power steering, you'll be surprised how good it is when you're not driving the 6er/7er. The car feels like a proper premium hatch. Just my 2 pennies AR

1) The basic steering. 2) Variable asssist, where the steering goes too light in Comfort Mode. 3) Variable ratio, where the steering is slow around the center, and quick at high steering angles (parking). I definitely prefer the basic type. All three have electric assist. |

Can you even get the Sport automatic transmission for the 116i? I thought it was available only with the normal 8 speed automatic transmission, not the sport version.

I have the Servotronic (option 2), and it's is a bit too light in comfort mode (but very nice to have when parking), and a bit too heavy (artificial heavy actually). If I order another new BMW when this lease is finished, I won't spec for anything other than normal power steering (option 1), as I think this standard option supply most feedback. Sport 8AT is not available on 116i/316i, only normal 8AT. But is there any other differences between sports and normal 8AT than the steering wheel paddles?
